CNPS 9500 vs. SI-128

I recently built an NSK2400-based system using a CNPS 9500 AM2 to cool my A64 3800+. I modded it by flattening the top to make it fit in the case and removed the fan, using just the two 120mm intakes to keep it cool. Not being terribly satisfied with the setup, or the 62c load temps, I decided to bu...

So you didn't have to re-install the OS at all? Nope, I didn't have to reinstall the OS at all. How much system RAM is Vista consuming? A quick look at a friend's laptop after booting showed about 700-800MB of physical memory used. Is this typical? My systems tend to be using about 400-500MB of RAM...

I am also running build 6000 of Vista without CnQ working. However, I haven't tried updating the chipset drivers. I'll try that and see if I can get any progress.

Was the new mobo similar to the old mobo (ie same brand, features, drivers)? XP can handle upgrades if they are to similar hardware. I went from an Abit NF7-S to an Abit NF-M2 nView, so I'd say they were sufficiently different from each other. On the initial boot into Windows, the system popped up ...

Seems like every time I change motherboards, the whole operating system has to be reinstalled. If I didn't have to do this with Vista, I would switch. I can attest that you don't have to with Vista. I just upgraded the motherboard on a Vista installation and it handled the change very gracefully. N...

According to some big cheese at MS, Vista is so secure it doesn't need an anti-virus. Colour me sceptical.... Ha, well that all depends on the user. I haven't ever had to use antivirus or antispyware software, but I'm sure there will be some people that manage to bring their Vista installation to i...

incredible driver/device support... What's wrong with WDM? Edit: Oh, sorry, thought you said "device driver"... Right, I agree that Windows XP's device driver model is perfectly fine. However, XP's coverage is terrible. I've had to burn so many CDs just to get network drivers for systems so I could...

The more I think about it, creating 3 ducts or chambers for the a. heatsink and motherboard, b. the PSU and c. the graphic card sounds more appealing but that would mean dividing the available fans over these chambers, and that would imbalance the needed airflow for the seperate parts (heatsink wou...

It's questionable whether the side intake counts as "in parallel" with the front two intakes, sure it will pressurise the case but it won't add to airflow, so a more realistic figure is 64CFM, and that's without accounting for case impedance (which could be significant, depending on case layout). I...

Yeah, I should have pointed this out before, when fans are placed in series the airflow is not additive (ie you can't simply add intake + exhaust to get the total CFM figure); in a free air situation two fans in series doubles static pressure (but CFM does not change), two fans in parallel doubles ...

I think sufficient airflow is incredibly dependent on case layout and clutter. I have almost no cable clutter in my NSK2400, and my (very roughly estimated) 60cfm of total airflow is plenty to keep everything cool. This number should probably go up to compensate for any cables or devices impeding ai...

I know it's not exactly the same situation since I am using a passive CNPS 9500 AM2, but switching the 120mm from an exhaust to an intake dropped my CPU temps by 12c. At the very least, it's a cheap, quick, easy thing you can do to see if it helps.

After missing out on a cheap new laptop on Black Friday (I guess getting up at 4AM is too late...), I was curious to see what everyone was hoping to get this season. I debated about asking for a complete upgrade (core 2 duo) but thought it might be a bit much to ask considering the family helped wi...

Re: Cool n Quiet on Vista?

I'd like to confirm this. Last night, I was on Vista (release 32-bit version) and CnQ "just works". The default scheme for power management of Vista is "balanced" or probably equal to "Performance on Demand" of RightMark CPU Clock utility. I tested this to confirm by opening the CPU-z. It show on i...

Cool n Quiet on Vista?

I'm having a bit of a hard time finding many resources on this topic. The few that are around all seem to indicate that Cool n Quiet should 'just work' on Vista if you set the power settings correctly. For some reason I can't find it referenced directly, but this would mean 'Power saver', right? And...

On second thought, maybe something like this would fit in the HDD chamber, while you just suspend your HDD in the extra 5 1/4" bay. The possiblities are definitely intriguing.

Looking at your pics and the ones throughtout SPCR I think that H20 is more than possible on this case. Small mod but very likely. 1/2" tubing is probably too much but I think 7/16 (pushin it), or 3/8 might work very well. Why would 1/2" tubing be out of the question? I would assume that the radiat...

can't you place the Zalman so that it faces the 120mm fan and the hot air is exhausted? Do you mean just rotating the heatsink ~45 degrees to face the 120mm fan? If so, I'd probably rather avoid that since the base of the heatsink isn't much larger than the IHS of the CPU. Rotating it would probabl...
