actually i noticed that after you posted that the two differ.
it would make sense that since the HD that newegg sells is "slim and light" that it would have a different model number. (sp80 vs pl40)
regardless, is this "slim and light sp80/pl40" HD quieter than the "regular" sp80?

can edward NG review this drive?
i'm not familiar with either the pl40 or the sp80 but reading the newegg reviews i'm impressed. i hope EDWARD NG or MIKE C reviews the PL40 versus the SP80! oh i got one detail wrong. barracuda 7200 not IV. "its actually less audible than a Seagate barracuda 7200.7, one of the quietest drives availa...

the most silent samsung is the PL40? more so than the sp80?
there's been quite a bit of discussion on this forum on the sp80 series, but samsung also has a pl40 line. according to this link http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-008&depa=0 the P0411N is the most quiet hard drive they've ever used, one said even more so than the barr...

your poll
where is your poll? i've not seen it. yes i do wonder if serial # place of manufactoring, batch #, etc. makes a difference in sound.
this is specifically the sp80 as it dominates over other drives by seagate wd maxtor, etc.

Samsung SP80 serial #'s --> analogy to CPU batch #s?
Thansk to Edward NG and his excellent review, I've made up my mind to buy a Samsung SP80. However, several patrons noted their SP80 is not that quiet. NG wrote "Please keep in mind that variations in manufacturing will and do occur. " Note that NG lists samsung's serial # in his article. http://www....

i own a wd60bb 60gb and it is EXTREMELY LOUD even with AAM turned ON. my original goal was to build an OC system, see my silent fanless TISU, but now that i've removed the PSU and CPU VGA fans the HD is really loud and annoying. i've been told that samsung is better than seagate. newegg is currently...

i mostly searched in ebay, pricewatch and newegg. the 8mb single platter 80gb barracuda does exist but retail only, not oem. quite honestly i do not need all that space of two platter. well then a related question is how much quieter is single platter over double platter? how much quieter is the sin...

8mb SAMSUNG single platter cache hard to find
thanks.
the 7200.7 single platter 8mb ATA cache i've only seen sold as a retail product.
i've never seen anywhere in the US the 8mb single platter SP80 the SP0812N as opposed to the SP0802N, which is 2mb.
has anyone seen the samsung sp80 8mb cache SP0812N?

2mb cache v.s 8mb cache for desktop
both the seagate barracuda and the samsung spinpoint offers drives in 2mb and 8mb models.
for the purposes of the desktop, how much of a performance gain is to be had with 8mb over 2mb cache. the price premiums of $10 seems pretty small between the models.

cheap and easy decoupling HD for generic aopen midtower atx
hi, i've read about the decoupling methods and they seem expensive, time consuming, and complicated. i have a generic aopen mid-tower atx case. also, half of the 5 1/4 bays are hidden behind the motherboard tray, so they are difficult to access. is there an easy and inexpensive way to decouple the h...

new models from Seagate/Samsung around the corner?
hi, i am writing this post on March 23, 2004. i remember when seagate introduced the barracuda IV, followed by V, followed by the 7200.7, in annual succession. Fairly quickly. Samsung introduced the sp80 about a year ago. since in the past seagate introduced new models on a yearly basis, and it's be...

what would be the most powerful but fanless, passively cooled VGA card out there, what model is it and who makes it?
DX9 would be desirable.
thanks

Idle High Frequency Noise 7200.7 versus Samsung -- with link
Idle High Frequency Noise 7200.7 versus Samsung, I personally find Idle High Frequency Noise, and Idle noise in general to be most irritating. I've seen a review http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200401/20040112SP1614N_6.html it lists 7200.7 as lowest Idle High Frequency Noise (in dB/A @ 18mm) a...

what is the most quiet notebook?
hi,
my emachines m5310 is quiet 50% of the time when i set it on "max battery" but the other 50% it runs a fan, and as i posted earlier, any fan noise annoys me.
what is the most quiet modern windows xp notebook on the market?
preferably one with amd xp-m or centrino

my fanless undervolted cpu, SOYO TISU motherboard and PSU
i bought the SOYO TISU b/c anandtech called it the OC' motherboard but it has a bug in that when you reboot, it does not save the CMOS. i used a celeron tualatin 1100mhz. pissed me off. i wanted to get a refund. SOYO said don't OC'. well duh. one day i got tired of the fan and i wondered if i could ...
