I was just wondering if this was "okay" to do or not :( .... I mean you could replace the standoffs pretty easily while putting the computer together using some chunks of rubber tubing or stiff foam blocks or something. People are always doing all sorts of extreme, tiny little modifications (whether...

I think most fan blades that you see are only meant to spin one direction... so just reversing the motor might not work as efficiently as actually flipping the fan over.

I was also wondering about the motherboard standoffs myself. Besides the CPU HSF often people will also have a Northbridge fan like on NF boards, and a fan on their video card, which is indirectly connected to the motherboard. For a place like SPCR whose members use a variety of silencing techniques...

So just to clarify, you're saying that you changed the fan direction over your XP-90 from blowing air onto it, to sucking air through it? 10 is a pretty good difference. I should do more research on this later on, as I was kind of thinking about the suck vs blow debate as well. Probably depends on t...

What about PAPST 80mm, 9dB, N/2GLLE ? I hardly think that there is anything lower than 9dB, and I am using steel case so there sholdn't be any vibrations. You know the old addage of "if something sounds too good to be true...." I don't think it's possible to get that low in the real world. I recall...

I certainly hope your idea works out well - I'm trying to concoct a one-fan solution too, but nothing's been finalized yet. It will be interesting to see how well this works out. :) I think your idea definitely looks good in principle, although I don't have any practical experience to back that up. ...

Re: Before I start cutting...

It's just rivets holding the 3,5" cage in place. Should I just drill them out, and will a regular drill be able to do this or how do I go about it? And how about the 5,25" cage, is it ok to remove the entire bottom or should I leave some of it for rigidity (if that's even a word :) ) Well, I don't ...

If you're worried about messing anything up too badly, the front drive cages are probably just held in by rivets. Just grind off the tops (or bottoms) of all the rivets and they should come out. If you change your mind or something you can probably rivet or bolt it all back together again afterwards.

This is an interesting idea, but I'm wondering if maybe it's not as great in practice as it is in theory. The only reasons I say this is because you don't see a lot of fan blade applications like this in the real world, and another thing I started thinking about was naval screw propeller application...

I think it depends on your individual setup and the details about how you implement it... if the case is really free-flowing (or is made to be) then it lets you use undervolted fans that reportedly are virtually silent. On the other hand if everything is more restricted then you might have to run mo...

I don't know how many knobs you need, but I've heard of a 2 knob controller from a company called JetArt that mounts in your PCI expansion slots at the back of the computer. http://www.jetart.com.tw/ Maybe other equivalents exist too? Best of luck Rick, as with all careful, meticulous first-time things, ask someone if you're not sure about something. ;) Or, consult a book like one of those "build your own" type magazines that you see around.

Re: Newbie here - What do you think of my system plan?

The fact that the air is being forced out means that air is forced in by the concentration graident. Unless you have a air tight case with the exception of the rear exhaust, air can get in through the cracks (or through where the front intake would be). In my experience a front intake fan doesn't h...

I'm fairly new to this too, but the first thing I see missing is any mention of case fans. With a passive GPU and PSU you will need at least one fan in the front of the case to blow some air out through the Phantom.

So I guess as long as you don't suffocate it heat isn't that big of an issue after all, so that's good to know.

It didn't occur to me to check for an operating temperature specification, I'll have to remember that sort of thing in the future. :)

Hi there, first post! :D I registered not long ago, but have been lurking around for a few months ever since I realized that I was long overdue for an upgrade, and at the same time recognized that every new computer I've owned has gotten progressively louder. SPCR has been a great resource to learn ...
