@FireFoxx74 the dothan already was ridiculously fast for sql. the more ram you throw at it the faster it will be. othewise the whole setup looks promising to me too. i personally run the older 915gm with a dothan, a zalman 7000 heatsink, 400w enermax liberty psu and a few samsung spin points. for no...

i agree with IsaacKuo, i'd also keep a fan running, especialliy in a server that you are not monitoring all the time. so it is possible that some crashed program lets it run like crazy on a hot summer day for a few hours or even days before you notice. the aria uses a built in PSU with a 120mm fan t...

Re: MSI Copper pad
What is weird about my experience was that with the 915GM board, there was no slop or play when a Zalman 7000 was placed on top of the Pentium M + MSI Copper adaptor. Yet with the 945GT it is a little loose even with the Zalman's screws turned all the way tight. The retention bracket appears to be ...

Re: Update on 915GM and respond to other questions
Hi All, 3. The Zalman 7000 is mounted now using the generic Socket 478 heatsink retention bracket, along with the MSI copper heatsink adapter, but it still seems a bit loose. I'm also concerned because in the BIOS "PC Health" screen, the CPU temp is 51 C, which seems way too high for essentially id...

i strongly suggest keeping a close eye on the disks with smartmontools and the other sensors you have... and then run a cpu/disk burn benchmark for 3-4 hours in really hot waether to see if everything stays stable. when capacitors dry out because of excessive heat, you will most likely start seeing ...

may i ask what raid adapter you are using? if it supports staggered spin up, a 400W PSU will be absolutely sufficient. with the exception of the super large sata drives with 4 platters or the hyper speedy 10k or 15k scsi disks none use over 10w. you can put your os on a usb stick, but take into acco...

if you are looking for a small and most quiet system, i'd recommend using a lex neo or lex twister barebone. comes with everything you need in a very sexy fanless case. the larger twister can accomodate 1 pci card plus a 2.5" disk or one 3.5" disk and no pci card. the smaller neo just runs with a 2....

the xp120 with a fan on top would be extremely tight. it has a height 63mm of plus the 25mm of the fan. totals to 88mm plus the cpu in the socket. looking at the case you'd probably have a 10 mm gap to the top of the case. not an aweful lot, but could work. all in all this seems like a pretty hot sy...

passive cases are something hard to achieve, especially since there are components sensitive to heat on the board that cannot easily be cooled with heatpipes and the like. http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=32496 i have posted another reply concerning this matter. using the right compo...

get a MSI 915GM Speedster with a Pentium M and if you need DVI some Nvidia 6200 TurboCache Card. Alternatively the CoreDuo successor 945GM Speedster that already comes with DVI. Low power usage, fast, very stable and enough SATA connectors. Also dual Gb LAN and so on. The 945 also has a IR connector...

the VIA boards or Lex boards/barebones (Lex Neo or Lex Twister) are perfectly fine for a file server in a SoHo environment. They are highly integrated and offer everything you need. Even if you use a Gigabit Ethernet connection, you'll pump through 20-25MB/s w/o problems using standard hardware. Bot...

2.5 inch drives while quiet may not be suitable for 24/7 operation. there are some that have been designed for blade servers that would suit exactly what you want to do. the system seems rather hot and overpowered for a htpc it seems to me. or are you also plannin on gaming a lot? while the hfx case...

cleaning out really small dust particles out of a computer is difficult at best. so i'd look into a solution that does not even get it in there. first stop on this would be as mentionned, eliminate the source of dust there are humidifiers that can ionize (sounds dangerous but is not :-)) water molec...

yes it does, even though it requires some fiddling with the APCI tables under linux... anothe vote would go towards the MSI 945GM with core duo support, DVI and PCI expansion card... very nice board as well, but it does not use the standard retention module unfortunately. I'd love to see this tested...

Building absolutely fanless designs is something not easily accomplished. The atx layout was designed with forced airflow in mind, and at the time components did not run as hot as they do these days. So creating a fanless system with atx style components is not ideal. While you may be able to cool c...

there's a couple options: older hardware off ebay uses less power than most current components but it's old and may not have the features you want VIA processors are not screamers but the mobos are highly integrated offering a lot of features. lex offers some interesting barebones that operate witho...

as i noted earlier, i run the 915gm version with a dothan. it has been thoroughly tested and is rock solid as a server. it is very easy to put on a zalman cooler with the standard retention module. i'd probably go for the new version if i were to buy everything again. the only thing that could hold ...

I vote for the MSI 915GM Speedster and Dothan core if you really want a quiet system. The chipset is passively cooled Processor uses a standard 478 socket rentention module, making it easy to fit a great number of Pentium 4 coolers. Fitting a Zalman 7000AlCu lets you run it without a fan in a fairly...

the 945gm does not use a standard 478 retention module. so you'd have to get the brackets somewhere else... i haven't seen a mod yet, but i suppose it can easily be done. otherwise, mounting a quieter papst fan would certainly also help a lot. not that the core duos can get up to 100degrees celsius ...

The Core Duo uses a socket 479. don't be fooled by the varying names of core duo 478 or 479. there really is only one version available.
