"Two Raptors" usually means the smaller, older, LOUDER ones. The "Second Generation" 74GB ones have fluid bearings and are quiter than the 36GB versions. There is supposed to be a "Second Generation" smaller drive on the way but nobody has seen any around yet. Search on Raptor in this forum or just ...

The rain outside. The WX channel says it will last through Friday :(

Thankfully we fed the dogs early and got them outside and back before it got heavy. Don't need that "wet dog" smell.

David,

Why does your sig say the team is in 22nd place? It always seems to be one place higher than where people say the team is in. Is the first place team in "0th" place?

A good HS will get rid of the heat from your Pentium 233. Just make sure you have a way of geting the heat out of the case. A bit of airflow is all you need. Perhaps a Panaflo L1A at 5v?

Sometimes I can remember back to when I heard the songs the first time around. Then there are some that I connot remember being new, just as their current hit. Must have something to do with what I was doing at the time.

All the 74 GB Raptors are Fluid Bearing but I don't think the smaller 36 GB Raptors have been changed from Ball Bearing to Fluid Bearings yet. If you can buy it, the smaller one will be BB. I recall folks saying the new smaller FB drives would be called "37" GB to seperate them from the older "36" o...

Devilsown, Have you run Maxtor's AMSet utility? It usually does a good job of reducing seek noise. As far as the temps go, how is it mounted? If you don't have metal to metal mounting (noise transfer) the temps will climb. That's why you see so many systems here with active cooling of the HDDs whic...

The first attempt was with some steel 5.25" -> 3.5" drive adaptors holding it up. I don't know if the aluminum is any cooler but it is a much neater setup and not nearly as wide as the earlier one as it now sits below the drive.

I find the 40 GB DM+8 in my e-mail/browser system quite silent. How hot it's running? I've seen few of these in work, and they seem to be over 40°C when hard-mounted to the case. I can only imagine the temps if the drive is sitting on a foam. :? Right now DTemp says 25 C . But that is with the 5V 8...

Crucial Memory Prices +25%

Just went to Crucial.com to check on the price of PC3200 512MB and found the price had jumped from $90 to $113. Strange, just because I was planning on buying a Gig :( Anyone heard of a reason for this? The price of gasoline, a FAB in Japan burned, the snow in Idaho is melting?

I find the 40 GB DM+8 in my e-mail/browser system quite silent. I have run Maxtor's AMSet utility to cut the seek noise and it is mounted on aluminum channel stock sitting at the bottom of a microATX case on dense foam. If you use the Hitachi tool or Maxtor's tool AMSet to quiet the DM+9 you will have one of the quietest seeking drives around (second to the new Samsungs acording to C't). As others have said the WD had an annoying idle noise and does not quiet down much with acoustic management. Halcyon's post of th...
