An update: I've got all the hardware except the CPU heatsink. I was waiting for Ubuntu 7.10, which has the 2.6.22 kernel, which has the coretemp module for Core based Intel CPUs, so that I can monitor my CPU temp before I start playing with heatsinks. After some blood, sweat and tears Ubuntu persist...

Do you mean the Celeron 420 1.6GHz? The Celeron D chips are the old Netburst architecture and best left well alone. Ooops! Yes. The website where I bought my chip listed it as Celeron D 420 for some reason, and I've been calling it that. Even with my current Ninja rev B I can run my system t...

This isn't a plug, but if you're serious about that much storage, you might consider one of these; http://www.coraid.com/products1.html Not cheap, but you can fill it with cheap 500GB Disks and have one hell of a SAN. Great RAID-5 Performance. Hm.. forgive my ignorance here, but what advantage does...

OK, an update on this. I'm going ahead with it as an experiment. I'm also trying to do it on the cheap. I've purchased these parts: - Celeron D 420 .. AU$57 - Gigabyte GA-VM900M board .. AU$59(!!!) - 1GB Kingston DDR2/667 .. AU$48 - Corsair Flash Voyager GT 4GB .. AU$99 I've put it together in an ol...

+1 to Wibla's suggestion of using software RAID over an onboard "fakeraid". Also, you can also do software RAID under Windows (I've done RAID 1 under Server 2003). One thing that really annoys me about using the fakeraid controllers: if you ever want to install or repair a Windows install using the ...

Which 4 GB USB flash device?
Hi all.
I'd like to try booting from a 4 GB USB flash device. I'm having trouble finding an up to date comparison where read and write performance of a range of drives are compared. Has anybody seen one?
Thanks.

Wibla: It's a Gigabyte GA-VM900M and a Celeron D (Conroe-L) 420. Michael: Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going back to the computer store today (they said they could sort it out for me), but if that fails I will look into those vendors. Das Saunamies: I'll be interested to hear if your board support...

Catch 22 - BIOS updates for CPU support
OK, so I feel like a n00b. I bought a motherboard and CPU. Before I did so, I checked the manufacturer's website to make sure the board supports the CPU. Seems to be no problem. Plugged everything together, fire it up.. nice little beep from the speaker, screen lights up, CPU detected, RAM detected....

Totally fanless Celeron workstation?
I only recently found out about the new Celeron D 4xx processors. When I saw that they have a TDP of just 35W (according to wikipedia ) I started getting some crazy ideas about a fanless budget workstation for internet browsing, word processing etc. I'm thinking: Celeron D 420 (undervolted) with a r...

8600GTS Silent - MSI, Asus or Gigabyte?
It's time to replace my FX5750 with it's extremely noisy little fan. With no certainty as to when the 9 series will be out, I've decided to settle with an 8600GTS. The three contenders are MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte. My case is a mid-tower ATX (Thermaltake Matrix). My motherboard is a Gigabyte 8I-915 D...

Thanks for the great info mr plow king. Unfortunately they are out of stock of the Ultra 120 with no ETA on new ones, and I can't find any other local (Western Australia) suppliers who have it in stock (seems to be a shortage here). I like the idea of fanless, but from what I've read in the forums I...

Thermalright HR-01 confusion
I'm thinking of ordering this heatsink from this company: http://vtechindustries.com.au/vtech/productinfo.php?id=HR-01-775 After reading the SPCR review of the HR01, I've got some questions though. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article290-page1.html 1) The review states that it is not available for ...

Thanks Mike 1) Antec P150 case -- damped panels, very sturdy, comes with good v. quiet PSU and built in HDD suspension. The simplest best quiet ATX case w/o modding. When PSU costs are considered, the price is about the same as the Thermaltake Matrix. Much as I would like a P150, where I am this is ...

Quietening upgrade.. advice sought
So, I have a noisy machine, and it's really starting to bother me. It's a 3.0 GHz Pentium IV (one of the very first socket 775 models). The board is a Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo Pro (no chipset fan). Video card is a passively cooled Gigabyte GeForce FX5750. PSU is stock one that came with the cheapish c...

XP-120 CPU cooler on Gigabyte bearlake boards
Hi guys, I've been lurking here for a week or so, and I'm getting ready to buy a new PC soon. Not sure whether this question belongs in coolers or motherboards, so please move it if it's in the wrong spot! Has anybody used the Thermalright XP-120 on one of the Gigabyte GA-DS3x boards (the models wit...
