I manage RM files by not using them. :) I've always hated Real Player, ever since I realized that every time I used it, it was reactivating its spy-ware component. No matter how many times I turned it off, it would always come back. I haven't used it in years, and I don't know if they still do that,...

Why do I always come here and ask questions before searching the internet? Sorry everyone. In case you're interested, the answer seems to lie here: http://biohackery.com/node/38 They use a USB drive and a LiveCD combination. Having to have both with you seems a bit of a pain, but I'd also guess that...

Remote linux off a USB drive?
I had an idea that seems brilliant. So brilliant, that I'm sure someone else has done it, and I'd like to know where and how. It seems that if you had a flash drive with a linux install on it that just had OpenSSH and VCN, you could plug in to (almost) any computer in the world and access your home ...

"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" is not fundamentally sound. Reductionism is self-defeating. If we use less and less, at what point do we stop? Who decides that point? Reusing things only works to a point (only so many people can read an old book until it falls apart). Recycling is inaccurate. A better term...

If I might be allowed to expand this argument slightly... The "Is the death penalty moral just?" question is just the tip of the iceberg as far as I'm concerned. I think the root of the question is, "Does the death penalty reduce the number of murders?" is the real question. It needs to be a deterre...

While it appears that better equipment can be had for less amounts of money, a really good sounding under-the-counter CD player cannot be had for any amount of money, lest it be Bose. I think I'll recommend a slightly-more-expensive bookshelf system and just tell her to get dad to drill it to the bo...

Under-the-conter Bose Alternative?
My mother is selling her piano, and is about to get sucked in to a Bose system. Now, be they good or bad, I'm quite certain she can get something equally as nice sounding for a lot less money. Any recommendations, anyone? She wants to put it under the counter, and she lives in Canada. Any help is ap...

Relleum, you must remember that the people who come to these forums and offer their opinions of these computer parts are the pickiest, whiniest, most exacting, most paranoid, most over-sensitive bunch of crazies you ever met. That's why SPCR is so special!! :) For example, consider the noise-level a...

I'm sure you'll do fine, hbm55. But if you're really worried about it, why not go to a pawn shop or computer recycler and buy the cheapest system you can find and practice taking it apart and putting it back together. That way, if you wreck anything, it won't matter much. I remember the very first m...

I too think it's a good decision. SPCR has developed a bit of "brand power" having become the true authority in silent PCs. I don't believe anything is silent until I read it on SPCR. Marketing systems with the SPCR branding is an excellent way to profit from this. A word of warning: Because these s...

I believe we always claimed that having your computer in another room was always the quietest. So this is brilliant. Point taken. I updated my profile. :) Yeah, I'm in the UK now. Maybe this is just one of those things that will take some getting used to being in Europe. Even Calgary, a city of a million people, had several stores that had very impressive selection and good prices. Does that sort of thing just not...

Shuttle st62k undervolting and Bios updates
Anyone know about how much you can undervolt a Celeron D 320 with this setup? Also, has the bios been fixed to allow MM5 to read the temps in windows?
Any help is appreciated.

And mas92264 does bring up, indirectly, an important idea. Since our entire scientific history points to a universe that operates on a complex, but orderly, set of "rules", what role does God play now? I know little about this, but isn't more and more of the bleeding edge of science running into th...

My reference sound suggestion is one hand clapping. :) But seriously, what about the POST beep? Even though I now have a closed loop, I did run it into a big reservoir for 12 hours or so, and several times I twisted the block every which way to make sure that there were no bubbles in it. So far so good. My system is quiet enough now that I can instantly hear if bubbles go through the pump. Nex...

Hey everyone. I have been wanting to watercool my hard drives for some time now, and finally got around to buying some slabs of copper and learning how to solder.
