Great work. Mike!
I'm now happier with my choice of A64 3000+
Btw, the first table in page 2 indicates (by mistake?) A64 3000+ a Winchester core, which is not consistent with rest of the article.

Thanks for the responses~ You may also want to consider an X1300. That would be a big save. Can you point me to any review that compares XT1300 and XT1600 in terms of video quality? Even greater if you could give me some detail about how those two compare... :D Also, do you know whether the on-board...

Need advice on on-board vs. discrete video
I'm looking at two options: 1. Biostar TFORCE 6100-939 + discrete video (maybe Asus EAX1600XT SILENT...) 2. MSI K8NGM2-FID (GeFOrce 6150 on-board video) I'm getting A64 3000+ (venice) and this PC will be used for TV watching, PVR, DVD playback/encoding. Mostly SD, at least for now. I don't play game...

I plan on building my new rig on Saturday and I will remove the PSU to examine it more closely--should be some FCC # on it somewhere . I shall post my findings at that time. Thanks, that would be great! :D Also looking forward to reading SPCR's review of this case. I saw it in the list of upcoming ...

I'd get that A64 3000+ S939 today if I were you. In fact, I think it was cheaper yesterday. Have you changed your mind? I remember you recommended me to go for s754. AFAIK, the s939 A64 3000+ is 1.8 GHz (btw, $127 one is E3 and E6 one is $146 @ newegg) while $121 s754 A64 3000+ (this one is E6) is ...

Thanks, CA_Steve & Ralf Hutter~ m0002a: I saw some on this forum too. For example, peerke wrote: "...The Plextor PX-716A (slot loading or not) is supposed to be the top Plextor drive and is sold with Plextools utility, but it's based on the LC897492FL chip and showes a disappointing performance in r...

Any respetable review site for optical drives?
Can someone recommend reliable review sites for optical drives?
I'm going to buy a slot-loading DVD burner and was interested in the plextor one (PX-716AL) but saw some bad comments on it.
If you'd like to recommend any particular model, that would be nice too.

Thanks for the quick response, Aris! My concern was caused by the posting like http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=29553 http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=29463 They were saying some single core processors might not be enough for HD content playback... I will look into th...

CPU power for a HTPC?
I plan to build a HTPC that I intend to use mainly for PVR and playing DVDs. I found a very interesting AMD 64 CPU: http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/details.aspx?opn=ADA3000AIK4BX Although it's s754, but has very low TPD for an AMD 64 (51W). Btw, this CPU looks very promising for quiet PCs. I...
