Re: Suggestions for a Silent Vmware 6.5 Server
The Xeon L5420 is a 50W TDP part, two of those should not be that hard to cool. I have no experience with rack mounted stuff but if the performance is good maybe some modification of the cooling system would be the cheapest solution.

Re: Gigabyte N3150N won't boot with PicoPSU
Timing could be an issue. That's the only possibility that I can think of. I had an old picoPSU, a wide input version, that worked with the old VIA mITX board I found it with, but not with more modern systems. A used a cheap power supply tester that complained that the old picoPSU was slow. https://...

Re: Old desktop - new build, simple upgrade or nothing?
During load it is. If you are limited by a weak power supply, or have size constraints then a low TDP CPU might be important. The low TDP parts (from Intel they are the -S or -T parts) are just normal parts limited in their max performance (and thus max power use). This makes sense in a few special ...

Re: Old desktop - new build, simple upgrade or nothing?
Thermal Design Power, helpful when you design a cooler for the system. Then you need to know roughly how much power the cooler will dissipate. Is it 10W or 100W. It matters. When Intel sets the TDP for a given part they don't measure it. Marketing gets involved and pretty soon you have something tha...

I'm not a fan of dampening material in computer cases, but in rooms (and hallways) it works very well. Textiles, special ceiling tiles, wall hanging DIY panels, floor mats etc can be used to lower echo and noise.

The pictures were too big to post here so i link them instead. pure curiosity. how come you do prefer 'quiet' over 'fanless'? I mean: pursuing silence, one would think that fanless is the ultimate solution... +1 for what Steve wrote above. Also, achieving silence as in pure silence is not possible. Fanless is great, but even that is not silent. AC adapters som...

Re: Mugen 5 no fan
It will work fine as long as you don't load the CPU for long periods of time. If you can touch the heatsink without burning your finger it's ok. Provided that the heatsink is mounted correctly. It's also not hard to mount the fan using zip ties. :) http://cdn.overclock.net/d/d3/d303c431_ad363f5f_n55...

It works if the case allow for some natural convection. Just a sealed box and weeks of Prime95 is a recipe for disaster. The Celeron J3355 has a TDP of 10W.

I would stick with the current "standard" setup; feeding the CPU fresh air from the front instead of hotter air from the graphics card.

Re: low-power, low-sound, low-cost PSU
Even if the picoPSU just passes the +12V rail on untouched there's still a limit. The traces and the cables can only take so much. The problem with feeding stuff from the brick directly is that we can have cases when the brick is on, feeding stuff 12V, while the picoPSU is off. Maybe that's not heal...

I'm not suggesting you do this, but it is possible to feed stuff +12V directly from the brick. I did this on several of my "high performance" picoPSU builds in the past.

Re: Possible to run random cheap fans slowly enough to be qu
Yes, cheap fans will most likely do fine. If you will use several fans, it would be good if they were the same model. That way, if you want to control them they would act the same. You could build a simple rheobus fan controller and then tune them as you see fit. Or give them a fixed voltage for sim...

Re: Quiet large capacity hard drive - WD Blue 6 TB?
Welcome to SPCR! I would get a single large drive. WD Red would be my first choice but the price would ultimate determine what drive I would get. Then set it up to spin down after 30 min of inactivity or something. Maybe even use an external drive. And use that 500 GB SSD for the often accessed data...

I can never remember what tool to use, so I try them until I find the right one. Usually there's a few possible candidates, for example a feature tool, a diagnostics tool for older drives and a diagnostics tool for newer drives. There's usually two tests, the short one and the long one. The short on...

Re: Samsung HD502HI clicking noise and delay
I would backup the data, then run the disk through the Samsung diagnostic program and see what it says. It's included on the very handy Ultimate Boot CD (works from USB).
If the program cannot find the HDD, change the SATA IDE/AHCI/RAID setting to IDE in the BIOS. Change it back after testing.

Ah, grain in the middle would fill the gaps and perhaps not reach out to cover the pipes properly. I don't think it matters much if the gaps are filled as long as the pipes make good contact.

Re: Ryzen 1700, thermal paste and Arctic 33 CPU Cooler
The four lines don't need to be thick, when the thing is mounted they each only need to be squeezed out to cover 1/4 of the base. Be very conservative with the amount of paste applied.
It's a 2D picture. Those lines might be paper thin.

Re: Ryzen 1700, thermal paste and Arctic 33 CPU Cooler
Since it's a naked heatpipe cooler they want the paste to be evenly spread on all the heatpipes. Rice grain in the middle will work I'm sure. But maybe performance will be slightly better if you follow the instructions.

Re: What's a good idle GPU temperature?
My conclusion is still that fanless is better than semi-fanless for a 75W graphics card. How good semi fanless is depends on the controller. If the temp hysteresis is on the low side and you happen to be just on the edge, try adjusting the case airflow like CA_Steve suggested above. Maybe a duct or...

Well, the Antec NSK 3480 is 8.1 kg and the Fractal Design Core 1100 is 3.8 kg for one thing. The build quality of the NSK 3480 is very solid. The Core 1100 is like I said not a bad case, but the build quality is not the same.

Re: Quiet Antec NSK3480 replacement
Fractal Design Core 1100 is the best cheap case I've used. But it is a cheap one. The Antec NSK 3480 is much more solid. That said, if it's a simple system it will do the job.
