Vipre antivirus+antispyware, 1 year $9.95. Only 2008-12-28.

Sunbelt Software's new AV product seems to be pretty good. I've just installed it on my wife's computer.
Read more about it here.

The special offer, only available this Friday, can be found here.

First you need to realise that powerful fans are inherently noisy. If you want to pull air through some serious restriction, there must be noise. Now when that's clear, I'll present two options: 1. Modify your case to reduce the restriction, thereby increasing the air flow and lowering the noise. 2....

Given the very same hardware I see no reason why there should be any difference whatsoever in power consumption during idle. - There is no computing going on. - There's no reading or writing to the HDD. - The screen shouldn't change. To figure out which OS is more efficient it's better to see how mu...

A few more comments comparing old & new fans here . I don't understand one of their statements (below image 6): "To deal with this noise, the newest Analog Devices fan controllers are designed to drive the fan at a frequency of 22.5 kHz, which is outside the audible range. The external control circ...

I'd like to read some more in depth technical description of those 4-lead fans and the PWM circuitry. I know that modern digital model railroads use PWM for speed control. The default setting use a fairly high frequency, but if you want more control and smoother run at low speed (typically for shunt...

Re: 2008-11 Motherboard and CPU for quiet gaming.

X58 - Core i7 will support SLI ... No. Actually, no chipsets support SLI per se. SLI support is defined by nVidia's graphic drivers and based on wether or not the mobo manufacturer pay royalties to nVidia for SLI support with that motherboard. Since nVidia doesn't have to pay royalties to themselve...

Note that the graph tends to exaggerate the difference ... because the bottom line is not 0 dBA, but 16 dBA. Quite the opposite, I'd say. The decibel scale isn't linear, but logarithmic. The zero-level is therefore at negative infinity, not at 0 dB. Just for fun I've recalculated the data to a line...

In front of me I have an almost new Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S Series. The fan is on constantly, even at idle. It might go faster under full load, but I don't do full load that often. At 50% load it stays the same.

Packing it in a layer of sturdy brown paper and mail it to some friend at the other end of the country should do the trick! I've been contemplating the same (original) question for some time. There are a few things to realise: 1. All cooling is air cooling. The differences lies in how heat is transferred to the air. Today it's mostly water vs heat pipes. 2. Water cooling can be substantially more quiet. The cost is money...

I'm sceptic. These cheap wattmeters (in general, not explicitly this model) have a reputation of being unreliable. - At low power, like a single device on standby, they often show a too high value. - When used on switched PSUs they often fail badly too, for reasons unknown to me. It would be nice to...

Your passively cooled GPU creates a need for good case air flow. 1. Follow Neil's advice to reduce restrictions at the air intake. If that's not enough... 2. Add another fan. I'd consider a side mounted fan to blow fresh air onto the graphics heatsink. This will reduce the load of the other case fan...

Yes they do contaminate if you look at the total life cycle. First we have production. - Raw materials must be collected and refined.
