Re: Help me make this puppy even cooler/quieter

Any thoughts? :) I would try to find out why you can't tell the difference between an undervolted Nexus (inaudible) and full-speed. Ditching the TriCool seems like a good idea: get a quiet fan with better airflow, that would lower temperature inside the case, and prevent your PSU from ramping up (a...

I don't love wood cases but this one looks pretty good, indeed. Just a little suggestion: If I need to flash the BIOS, I can simply remove the lid and attach a floppy drive. I always burn my BIOS files to optical media (usually CD-RW, turn on verification to stay on the safe side), and no need for a...

Re: My cooling hell.

I am cooling an amd athlon 64 3200+ 2 GHz socket 939 or a simular cpu, not above 2 GHz. I'm cooling my 3200+ Winchester (1.25V) on a mATX board with an AC Freezer 64 Pro undervolted to 5V. It's pretty quiet, but it's better not to turn off the fan, unless it idles most of the time. The case has a 1...

My experience with my two Athlon64 is that they start behaving weird at temperatures near Tcase, but it 's not always immediately evident. As I use my systems for distributed computing (and I hate to run machines that randomly go haywire), I tend to stay well below max TCase. But, if it works for yo...

Re: Using SpeedFan to dynamically control 120mm fan?

My question is whether or not I can use SpeedFan to control the speed of a 120mm fan There's no difference in controlling a 120 mm or an 80-mm fan as long as you stick with the same 'kind' of fan: if your system has 4-pins PWM connectors you need a 4-pin PWM fan, or a 3-pin (or Molex + adaptor) fan...

The new extreme is as tall as the original U120, and that fits in a Solo, someone posted a shot of that setup some days ago. It's a tight fit, that's true, there's not much space left in my Stacker which is 14 mm wider than the Solo.

If it really needed 26 A, it would have a peak power consumption of 312W, sounds like too much even for an 8800.

Fan connectors on a motherboard are not all created equal: some of them are speed-controllable while others are not.

Some boards do not have any controllable header at all.

The U120 can be rotated with the aid of the S-Clip (optional) - it's worth noting that the updated version of the U120 should be out real soon now, but I don't know if it will fit on 939.

Xbit labs has some interesting PSU reviews where they connect the PSU to an UPS and see how much load they can put on it before it screams for overload. In this one you can see a SmartUPS 620 connected to several units. The limit is between 315-380W, so it's 0.6 or less ! The power factor of your PS...

Strange fan controller behaviour. Hints?

This is a Speedfan plot from my Enermax Noisetaker PSU; other than assuming the onboard controller is gone, is there any other reason that may explain this behaviour ?

The Solo is intended for cool/quiet operation without any modding and definitely aims to be a good looking case. Yours doesn't look good at all and required extensive modding.

I wonder whether you could achieve similar results simply by modding a cheaper case.

? most likely you don't need 4 case fans.

However Nexus, Noiseblocker Black Fan XE1 and the Fander are currently recommended fans in 92-mm class. For more info, read this article

If you asked me what's the most popular cooler here, I would have answered with no doubt whatsoever, the Scythe Ninja. The only explanation that comes to my mind is that both my F64P and your U120 must be below average samples.

I was really tempted to get the Ninja B to test it on my dual core Opteron just to see if it could really blow away the U120, but in the end I decided to save some cash :)

To me it's just the other way round :) the Freezer Pro at full throttle is about 8-10 degrees behind the U120. The fan spins faster, that's true, but the F64P is way smaller and less capable to transfer heat quickly, it doesn't seem entirely illogical to me that the Ultra 120 performs better. I usua...

TriCool are only ok if you use them at low, which means you could probably move more air just breathing through the vents ! ;) At 2000 rpm every fan is noisy; whether a good fan @ 1000 rpm is quiet enough or not, is matter of ambient noise and personal taste, the average hard drive is louder than th...

My harddrives currently are temped at approx 20-23c, without the fans they still stay at a impressive 40-43c. Undervolting your intake fan to either 5 or 7 V would be a good idea: 20 degrees is uselessly low. Regarding the case, define your preferred airflow then block all the unused vents. The top...

I just keep a 'case speaker' from an old box just in case; you don't need those things often if you don't have POST problems.

FWIW I had a POST problem while building, but it didn't beep at all... ;)
