No, I'm pretty sure it is perfectly in-context. He said it several times, in fact: http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/L._Ron_Hubbard My favorite version is "Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If you want cheap and silent, pick that cheap Shuttle Atom barebone, add a drive and some RAM and you're good to go. It would be slow but not as terrible as you might think. But if you want fast compiles, you've got to spend more money and/or to live with the noise. If you know someone selling powe...

Wasn't there a paper a while ago which found the average unpatched XP machine lasted for only a few minutes without a firewall before being infested by a worm of some sort? The thousand-dollar-suit case was just an example of a basic economic fact: All products have a price-quality curve, and (if quality is the dependent) that curve is almost universally asymptotically horizontal. The product you purchase is (assuming a so-called rational consumer ) at the "sweet spot"...

Possibly an argument for brick & mortar purchases (if you assume RMA/shipping costs for a reasonable fraction of purchases)? What is the brick & mortar markup vs the internet on most monitors?

I wonder how a brick & mortar shop would feel about you exchanging a monitor four times for noise.

Granted, its not forthcoming, but wouldn't ARM moving to a tri-gate process nullify any Intel advantage? Hmm.. Yeah those look very neat, and obviously IBM hardware should have good drivers, but a quick glance at Froogle shows $150-$200 or higher (3x + price increase) :)

This would be primarily for expansion storage (speed-critical data will be on motherboard). I meant 100MB/s while writing to a single HDD (I am assuming that bandwidth is fungible, or will effectively be via software RAID striping of partitions) I see a few PCI cards which claim "150MB/s", which I a...

I agree, Bin Laden could easily come out with a video saying he was still alive, and that alone would cause problems for the administration.
