No you don't, but it'll help keep you from damaging your GPU core when handling the card with the heatsink attached. FYI on the Radeon HD3850 (likely the 3870 as well), you can use the stock mounting screws+bracket to give even more pressure on the GPU core -- the screws on the S1 and the stock cool...

P.S: I'd like to assume zoob meant low speed YLs, but I'm 90% sure these are medium speed YLs he was talking about. That means you can get more or less the same overclocks with air cooling. I am using Yate Loon DSL12's. I bought a large number and cherry picked a few that sound the smoothest. Used ...

Why not go for a passive PSU? I believe Saphire and Powercolor makes that GPU with passive heatsinks? I was going to write up a reply VERY similiar to MoJo. - For low power systems, 1x120mm is enough (A64 3000+ Venice @ 2.7 GHz w/6600 GT) - For cooling high power system (QX9650 @ 4 GHz w/X38 and 3870) 5V Yate Loon DSL12 is enough (both cooling and quiet) - Scythe Quiet Drive for Hitachi 1 TB, WD 500...

I have a Belkin 1500VA UPS from the Dell Deals about a year ago... it does not cure MX5021 hiss, though I think it's only an approximated sine-wave UPS.

I can't hear anything from my two Dell 2007FP monitors.

My Dell 3007WFP has a whine when it's in stand-by.

All monitors connected to the same UPS... not sure if that's causing a problem.

zoob, they're testing the first of the 45nm chips, it's the first (so far only) 45nm chip, hence the long article with much ado about power measuring etc. Yours chip is (most likely) a 65nm chip hence the need for more voltage and more watts. I've got a QX9650... it's an ES, but I've got an additio...

Holy crap 1.282V for 4 GHz... they've got one cherry chip. Most need 1.35+, and even some recent ones require in excess of 1.40 to bring it stable (mine included).

This setup is sitting on a table next to me in open air so it is quite distinct and intrusive. My 3850 stock fan is on the oppo...

You can ear electrical noise from 3870 when mouse is in movement? What kind of mouse, usb or ps2? Err, your sig is too small :P USB Razer DeathAdder... last time I've experienced this was back with a Radeon 9800 and an Intel P4 setup (noise disappeared when I switched to an Athlon XP and nForce2). :|

3870 > 3850 ~= HX620

This was of course very quick testing. I'll test for longer than 5 minutes on the weekend.... I was too excited to get the 3870 installed, then I had problems with a weird short on my second machine's P35-DS3R + TRUE120.
