As near as I can tell, I replicated the calculations used in the article The exact amount of the voltage drop depends on the fan's impedance. With the 0.2A Zalman fan, the drop is around 6V, which means the fan runs at 6V. The resistor dissipates 0.55 watts, and gets a bit warm. The voltage drop wit...

I forgot about the Ultima shipping with a set of clips for 120mm fans, too. Good catch. Anandtech has a picture here.

No matter what that site says, I swear by Arctic Cooling MX-2 paste. I find that I get even lower temperatures than with AS5, and it's easier to work with and clean off. I just ran into tons of watercooling enthusiasts who love the stuff (and it's discontinued predecessor), too, so there might be s...

If you're pairing with a 120mm fan, you'll have some work to do with the Ultima-90 is designed for 90/92mm fans. If I had to guess, and this is only a guess, I'd give the advantage to the HR-01 Plus. Both use the same mounting hardware, and possibly the same bases with the same array of six U-shaped...

Resistors: Check my math, please!
If I use a 56 Ohm resistor like this one on a .30 Amp fan, it would be functionally equivalent to running the fan off of the 5V rail, right? Or did I do something backwards?

Right now I'm using Zalman Ramsinks on the Voltage stuff. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3141/2659562176_cf3fe9f543.jpg I've got my system up and running again, but I haven't really stressed it yet. I may do the hacksaw mod after I'm sure the card's not going to fail on me. While I'm modifying thing...

They use very similar, maybe even indentical mounting hardware, so I don't think your selection criteria is going to help you. I guess in terms of physics, the Ultima 90 would be easier because it's lighter, but that's about it.

Help with a HR-05 SLI/IFX and big Video Card Coolers
I was so worried about the tall mounting bolt from the HR-05 touching and possibly shorting out my video card http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3275/2656845042_54b9b20bbb.jpg that I didn't even consider that the bolt on the other side of the chipset would be too tall for two-slot GPU coolers: http://fa...

I use AS Céramique because it's cheap (I have a 12g tube that seems to last forever) and not conductive or capacitive in any way. I used Céramique exclusively for three years or so (I bought a huge tube), but I've recently started trying other things because I misplace my Céramique, but also bec...

I think my friend's Solo shipped with a faulty button - it was stuck "on" so the power supply and other fans spun up as soon as it was plugged in, and it would shut down after 2-3 seconds. I should check with him to make sure it was a Solo, though. *EDIT July 11th* I just confirmed with Peter; I rem...

4850 for $145 shipped after $30 rebate, $20 coupon code
From SlickDeals . I just bit on this one. Here's a link to the item , use VGA7420 as your coupon/promotion code for $20 off, and jump through some rebate hoops for an eventual $30 check. And if you want an after market cooler for it, SVC's price (with their cheapest shipping) on a Accelero S1 rev. 2...

HD 4850: Ethics, Warranties, and Aftermarket Coolers
Or: A Study in Indecision I am enamored of the HD4850. Newegg seems like the place to go for this purchase. There's a mail-in rebate that will eventually lower the price by $20-30 on all of their HD4850 cards but one. A few have caught my attention: Buying VisionTek offers $5 instant savings, a chan...

The largest cooler I've seen in the Allure is the Evercool Buffalo used in Madshrimps' review. It's 142.7mm tall and uses a 100mm fan. Are there any top-down coolers that would be starved for air with that much clearance? As for towers, I've definitely got my eye on a Xigmatek or maybe a Thermalrigh...

I wouldn't put a GT280 in any system, but that's just me. A quad core processor at stock speeds (or slower?), on the other hand, is tempting. IN WIN Allure: It's... it's so pretty!
Okay, so the marketing animations are pretty ridiculous , but as for the case itself, I think they've managed to bypass the tacky valley and ended up with something charming. Even though it's just a well-decorated Alpha360 . There are ample pictures on Newegg , a (...disheartening) review with many ...
