It's quite an expensive option, but buying an internal silencing enclosure and an IDE to USB2 adapter cable is the only solution I've seen. I've found aluminium external enclosures that cool drives well enough, but if anything they amplify the noise rather than reducing it. This seems like an untapp...

My Seagate 7200.7 does the same thing, very annoying in a system that's running 24/7 in my bedroom. That's why I replaced it with a Samsung drive, now it's just used as an external backup.

My good old 5400RPM Seagate was a great drive, but the more recent drives have been disappointing.

Hey Steve can you post the actual dimensions of the Drive-A-Way please. I wasn't able to find it anywhere including Nexus's site. :? It's roughly 20.5cm x 14.5cm x 4cm (length x width x depth), add an extra 1cm to the length if you use the thumbscrews. Quite large for an internal enclosure, with th...

If the CPU heatsink is too hot to touch then I don't think you should consider running it like that full time. You need decent airflow over a fanless heatsink, I think putting in a duct and maybe replacing your heatsink with something larger would be a good idea.

IMHO Nexus fans are one of the best low noise fans you can get. The quoted airflow and sound stats seem quite accurate and the sound is smooth with low motor noise. I don't think you'll be disappointed with the sound level if you replace your Antec fan with a Nexus, but I'm not sure how your airflow...

You could always try connecting an 80mm-120mm adapter to your 70mm-80mm adapter. The other posters are probably correct that you wouldn't see much of an airflow advantage over a smaller fan, but personally I'd like to see that tested. Maybe you could post CPU temperatures before and after using the ...

I've always been a little reluctant to put anything cardboard inside my case, but I've come to realise that it's a silly thing to worry about. I doubt any component inside my PC would still be functioning by the time it was hot enough to burn cardboard. I've just chucked together a simple cereal box...

I'm very happy with the noise level of my LG DVD-RW running in an external USB enclosure. It's not silent when writing a CD but I can barely hear it when playing a DVD movie.

I've been impressed with the new Spinpoints too. The idle and seek of my NIDEC SP2514N is easily quieter than my 200Gb Seagate 7200.7. Running in a Nexus enclosure inside an AcoustiPack lined case, even seek noise is inaudible at 1m. After being unhappy with the idle noise of my Seagate I nearly bou...

I haven't tried the SmartDrive 2002C, but the Nexus is definitely a better silencer than the two other enclosures I've tried, a SilentDrive and a SilentMaxx HD-Silencer. Maybe if there's a comparison between either of those enclosures and the SmartDrive that'll help you decide. The Nexus Drive-A-Way...

This was about 18 months ago using a fairly new 52x LiteOn CD-ROM drive and a music CD pressed a couple of years earlier.

I considered mounting a DVD-RW vertically as I wanted to run a tower case PC on it's side to fit it under a TV. In the end I decided that it wasn't worth the risk so I got an external 5.25" USB enclosure and put the drive in that. It's worked perfectly and having a portable drive has been useful mor...

Testing a Silentmaxx HD-silencer

I bought a Nexus Drive-A-Way enclosure for use in a silent media centre PC I'm building, I wrote about my experience with it in this thread http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=23058 . Since it'll be used to record video I decided that I'd probably need a second HDD for both performance ...

I'm running a similar system but with a slightly cooler 600Mhz PIII. IMO a system like this is relatively trivial to silence, no expensive specialist components or well thought out air flow ducts are really necessary. The CPU and PSU should be particularly easy. I find that most half decent PSUs can...

Thanks very much for all the advice. I’d never have considered using a CF card or a zip drive as a HDD replacement if it hadn’t been suggested here. I’ve got an old internal zip drive that’s been packed away since I first bought a CD-RW, it'll be nice to have a new use for it. Certainly less hassle ...

<4Gb low noise IDE/SCSI hard disk?

I know this sounds like a really wierd request in these days of 250Gb hard disks, but I'm looking for a 100Mb-4Gb hard disk that doesn't make much noise. I know I'm not going to get a new drive that size, but a few recommendations should help me find one second hand. I rescued an old Amiga 4000 that...

Testing the Nexus Drive-A-Way enclosure

I've lurked here for ages and picked up a lot of good advice, so I thought I'd post my experience with a Nexus Drive-A-Way enclosure I bought from Kustompcs.co.uk This isn’t really a review of the Nexus enclosure, I don’t have any sound measuring equipment or the time needed to perform tests of mult...
