Not especially, 44 degrees is still reasonably cold for a graphics card- my 6600GT says it will do 145 before throttling, so I'm sure you've got some headroom. I do have a mild overclock though, with the VF900 running as low as I can get (goes through a Zalman fan controller first). :) I wouldnt wor...

If your using the 'classic view' for the drivers, then just right-click on the desktop and select the name of your monitor. The temp readings are accessible from there. If you've got the horrible new interface, you'll want to revert back to the old design, although you can still find the temps liste...

I've got the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro on my 3500 (cheap as a very cheap thing), and it runs passive up to 35 degrees before the mobo starts the fan (probably could go higher, but I chickened out at 40 degrees and lowered the limit :) ). The fan never comes on unless it's really thinking, but I'...

It may be worth flipping the foam over as well- at the moment, theres airflow between the foam and case, but none between the foam and HDD. The foam will act like a warm blanket underneath the drive. Turn it so the drive is sitting on the spikes, it will sink a little but should still leave some spa...

I doubt the 2GHz RAM chips can go passive either...

Thanks for that, Longwalker. It may have been useless at floating-point, but the Cyrix makes for an impressive coaster! (I ripped out the mounting bracket for the CPU as well so that it wouldnt scratch my desk) I'm now left with a real puzzler- what to do with the serial mouse included wit...

Nope, it'll pull 110-120VAC from the wall, and put it through a transformer to provide the 20KV potential needed. Same thing happens in reverse from overhead powerlines to the local substation, and again from there to your home. Basically, high voltage means low current for a given amount of power, ...

Thanks for that (and apologies for hi-jacking  ) I've just shelled out for the Nexus kit, should arrive this week. It's good to see someone having success doing this. I've been trying to implement this for a while, but I cant get my hands on any grommets! I cant believe that it's the norm to only use one per screw, though... :? Again, some pics would be nice 8) It makes sense to put a grommet either side of the ...

jharne- yeah, it scared me as well! :) And it overhangs the motherboard by a good three inches, which seems like poor design to me. :? mb2- the only things for salvage (besides a few new bits to play with) are the Molex extensions and some of the ribbon cables. The CD-audio lead is of an archaic des...

That's about what I thought- incidentally, with regards to the computer running well again, it was running Windows 95 until this morning when it's previous owner pulled the HDD out and put a hammer through it. I'll maybe just turn the case into a beer-can dispenser, that would be quite cool... :D We...

Could you not simply rip out most of the internal drive structure and suspend them all? Or failing that, for a normal ATX case remove most * of the 3.5" bays and suspend half of your SmartDrives in them? It's probably not worth replacing all of them just to use them with a case. *I say most of the 3...

Thanks for the replies. Bluefront- I think the vacuum hose idea could work, but I'm not sure if it would be soft enough to properly insulate the components. I'll need to look into that... Elusive Grommets- any ideas?
Hi all, I'm currently suffering from a flare-up of quieting-itis, and so I'm trying to find soft rubber or silicone grommets to re-mount everything in my case- fans, drives, PSU... :) they're the sort of thing that's used for mounting the HDDs in some cases I cant quite remember the names of (going ...

So it worked the very first time with two HDDs, but not again since you tried it with the PCI card? The only thing that leaps out at me is have you tried both drives without the PCI card again? It could be that the USB ports are causing conflicts with the second HDD, using the same irq lines or something. Also, is there a chance that the jumpers arent quite connecting properly- now and again the s...

Can I just ask where you would put a fan controller if you want a quiet machine to play DVDs? Nice idea, putting the HDDs up top, I'm not so sure about the PSU in the front corner- is the case on stilts to let the warm air out? Also, where is the PSU getting its airflow from? There doesnt seem to be...
