Mtron SSD Failure
This is just to inform fellow forum members about a recent failure with one of the Mtron SSD SLC 16GB drives. This is a 2.5in drive and is about 6 months old. Was running Xp ProSP3. It suddenly wasn't there anymore ! It suddenly became unrecognised by WinXp. I reinitialised the drive (didn't format ...

RE: CPU, is the 4850e worth another $37 for 200hz? Can it be OC without much more heat and noise? How much? This build is definately starting to get feature creep... fun thinking it through though, even though for the time spent I could have bought whatever was nice and have it already. Probably no...

1. If you don't want to pay for a Corsair, then try at least to get a modular PSU. Fiddling about with extra cables is a right pain if you can just use the ones needed. e.g. avoiding PATA cables is all you need is SATA; avoiding the floppy cable; avoiding the dual PCI-E SLI cables if not needed. I h...

Re: Is it me or does the Quiet Drive suck?
They don't suck, but they can't be hardmounted. If you hardmount them in anything but a chassis made of granite they do indeed amplify vibration to an annoying degree. I use a 2.5" Quiet Drive on my Velociraptor, suspended, and I'm extremely pleased with it. Then again, because the drive was alread...

2 Cents from me
1. Modular Corsair 520 or bigger. 2. What do you want to do ? Maybe an 8500 is enough ? Already passive. 3. ATX. Leave enough expansion space. Asrock or Gigabyte. 4. 4GB 5. AMD 4850e 45W 6. Mini Ninja is good enough 7. OK 8. Junk them and go with Scythe 1200 rpms plus a Zalman Controller. 9. Disc Dr...

I can verify from my experience that these sort of enclosures need to be uncoupled from frames. I have 2x Grow Up Japan boxes with 74GB Raptors inside. a. When they are placed horizontally on the plastic mounts of the P182 bottom drive box - they are quiet. b. Mounted in one of the 5.25in bays in th...

You see, I'm a very impatient person and find all those steps too slow :P . Luckily I now have a Logitech G15 keyboard and I know if the lights on that are on then my computer's on. I've actually been looking for a way to turn on my computer with my keyboard but have never found any bios setting th...

1. Fans. 2. Top opening
1. Suggest you get the 1200rpm version. I don't have Noctua but I do have Scythe FDB fans both 800 and 1200. The 1200 has a greater dynamic range of voltage control i.e. it's possible to undervolt further before it stalls. Noise level for either can be made to be the same but more range with the 120...

NAS box
The Infrant Ready NAS NV+ is very easy to use and setup but might be too expensive now that Netgear has bought the company. See : http://www.readynas.com/ If you can find a diskless version then it might well do what you want. I have two of them and use one to back up the other. One has 4x 500GB in ...

I suspect that much of your noise is from the 4 Seagates growling away. See what the noise is without them. You may be better off, (if you can afford this), to junk the Seagates and go with 4 VRaptors in Scythe boxes (see post by Xuestor in : http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4865...

Thanks very much for these replies. I'll make further investigations. The pc seems to start very quiet but develop a hum after a few minutes. Maybe this suggests the psu is the problem. At last a useful reason for the top vent. Put a passive Silverstone PSU in this case and let the top vent exhaust the hot air. A perfect but serendipitous application.

4. Should I get Acoustipack, or would there not be much benefit for the effort if I choose the right fans? The one place where Acoustipack helped me was on the inside of the P180/P182 door. It is not a huge change, but I could definitely could tell the difference. My guess is that the Seagate drive...

Re: Temps for Velociraptor
Normally 7200 rpm 2.5in drives run in the high 20's/low 30's so mid 40's is pretty hot. But this isn't a 7200rpm 2.5" drive. Honestly people seem to be seeing 2.5" and thinking laptop-drive and all the rules that go along with it. This is more like a 10k 2.5" SAS server drive. Different animal. Loo...

Temps for Velociraptor
The mid 40's temps that were quoted in the last few posts apply to 3.5in drives.

Re: MIKE CHIN ARE YOU LISTENING ????
I can answer this question. The aluminum mounting holes won't fit the holes of the drive, so to make it fit, I skipped out one of the aluminum bricks, and one of the thermalpads. Then it will fit. Nop, no damping what so ever. I will put some Acusti's into the case at the end of this year since I got some fan motor whine to hide at the upper chamber, people with very quite system to start with may hear the idle but I doubt it. The idle sound is the first to get drowned out if you have any ot...

Top Vent
Are you using the Corsair ? If so, then the top vent is for the air to come IN to feed the Corsair. Are you using the Antec PSU that came with the case ? If so, then Antec must have had a reason to put the vents there - let the hot air out of the top maybe. See the review by SPCR - http://www.silent...
