I was simply told that the tape broke it and that it was my fault. I put it on 1-2 years ago.

Effect of duct tape on electronics

The question: My aunt's computer (a k6-2 400) had a VERY bad 40mm buzzer pushing air on the heatsink. I ordered a 50mm fan from coolerguys but i couldn't mount it. (It was too thick) So i used duct tape on it. Apparently it wreaked the comp. This was allegedly said by an tech. It cost much $$$. (The...

Zhentar, why don't you use a tupperware container with two holes in the lid? I hear they work very well. Thats what I'm using now, except without the holes, I intend to return the container soon. My experience however says this route is completely unnacceptable to a silent PCer, the noise increase ...

What, the chip or the lightbulb? BTW I invented a way to keep either's temps near ambient. I call it the Electron Path Disruptor (EPD for short). The EPD uses a manual lever that ceases all electron displacement. Use of this device has one serious side effect. It happens to shut down the device in u...

What I find interesting is that you are discussing a 100W processor, while had it's output been about 8-10W less, this discussion may never have taken place.

Think about it.

Some of the stores that sell the HSF combo also sell the blower seperately. In theory you could mount it on the back of the PSU so that the fan sticks out the back. Here's one place that sells the blower: http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/fan-75.html You may have to install the PSU and then...

Do number 3, but use a 120mm blowhole. If possible get an Aero 7 fan for the new intake. If you can't get an Aero fan mount a wire grill about 1"-.5" away from your axial fan, or use no grill at all.

I heard that fans are more effective pushing than pulling.

Does the psu keep cooler or just the air?

What I did to my 400JB is take 2 large (8" x 2" x 0.5") brass blocks and bolted them to the side, and put foam infront, on the top, and on the bottom of the drive.

The brass acts as a deadener and a heatsink.

I think it was your syntax that screwed me up then, and personally I don't think that temps have as much of an effect on life as the saying says.

When (X - 10C), then (Y / 50%). Yeah it was the syntax. Sorry.

The BURNING Maybe you can try ducting the heatsink to the bottom of the psu with some cardboard and elbow grease. From all the stuff (maybe bs) I've read a decrease of 10 deg C shortens the life of the processor by half. I heard that a decrease of temps by 10C doubles the life of the processor.

A little off from the topic, but where would dampening be best used, on the intake side or the exaust side?

I wasn't thinking of the CFM/DBa ratio, I was only thinking of the effect of frequency on dampening.

Thanks for the replies, this is very nice information to have.

So what would be easiest to dampen/block, a 120mm, a 92mm, an 80mm, or a 60mm? (assuming of course that each produced the same DBa)

It sounds to me that the 60mm fan would be easiest, but I'm probably wrong.

Sound frequency and dampening

Is lower pitched sound more difficult to dampen than higher pitched sound?

If so, than a 50DBa 60MM fan would be easier to dampen than a 50DBa 120MM fan, with an 80MM one in the middle, right?
