Another Thorens Reborn: TD160

http://www.silentpcreview.com/Another_T ... born_TD160

The Thorens TD160 is a poor man's Linn, and still amazingly popular as the vinyl revival continues. This is the story of a 160 reborn, with many components "borrowed" from the Linn.

Re: MikeC's Audio Craft: An Introduction

Those, are beauties. I was reading an article just recently about how there's an increasing market for narrower baffle designs (and in turn smaller drivers), partly driven by an aesthetic choice for typical home use, known to many as 'the wife factor'. Great to see some bigger woofers in there - wh...

Re: Thorens TD125 + SME 3009 II Fully Restored

Lovely turntable and restoration MikeC should have figured you were into hi-fi, it all makes sense now. It was never a secret. :o The motor electronics PCB looked OK, no leaky caps, but they're 40+ years old. As the saying goes: They don't make them like they used to. Yes, but any table show...

Re: Two Amp Projects: 8x100W DIY & H/K 770 Restoration

That's some beautiful work Mike. You should do a piece giving readers a little tour of your whole audio setup. I think people would find that interesting. Where'd you source that enclosure for the 8x100W? I'm gathering parts for an amp build of my own, and I like the looks of that. Hey Russ, thanks...

Re: MikeC's Audio Craft: An Introduction

Hey Mike, if you ever redo the baltic birch plinth, when laminating the layers, turn each layer perpendicular to each other. This way, you can avoid the dreaded double thickness layer at the glue joint. "dreaded"?? :?: :!:  I considered this but cutting up the plywood sheet was much simpler & ...

Re: Two Amp Projects: 8x100W DIY & H/K 770 Restoration

Mike, I've never actually heard the Hypex UcD series of amps, but have read plenty of good things. You're probably already aware of this, but their "nCore" line gets all the publicity now. I've heard those are awesome (again, only hearsay), but they are significantly more expensive, especially if y...

Re: Two Amp Projects: 8x100W DIY & H/K 770 Restoration

Hey Mike, If you want more power in a class-D amp, check out those based on IRS2092. There are lots of vendors selling IRS2092-based PCBs, including Sure Electronics. The "LD15R" modules by "LJM" have a good reputation over on diyaudio.com (and the designer himself hangs out there too). ConnexElect...

Re: Two Amp Projects: 8x100W DIY & H/K 770 Restoration

Looks clean and gorgeous so far. :) I did play around with the notion of building an amp a couple years back, but as I'd need optical in and 5.1 DTS/Dolby decoding.... that can't be done in a clean DIY fashion. Actually, integrating an appropriate sound card into the enclosure which holds the amps ...

I've measured my Orions many times, and with the standard xover/eq, they go down pretty low into the bass. Re: MikeC's Audio Craft: An Introduction

Even though I like restoring & building TTs, I just don't listen to LPs enough to make it worthwhile to invest lots of $ in cartridges. I've had Supex 900, Linn Akasa etc in the past, and I'd consider a naked Denon 103R glued to an aluminum L-shaped piece that I think I could make easily enough... b...

Re: MikeC's Audio Craft: An Introduction

It does seem that a lot of recent speaker designs attempt to improve the direct/reflected ratio. What's really interesting here is how different the implementations are. Dipole (e.g., Linkwitz, Nao), waveguide (Geddes, JBL), cardioid (Kii) sure look different! I'd really enjoy being able to compare...

I'm with total agreement with you on the Audiomods tonearm - I built mine in May. Re: Subjective vs Objective? Audible, significant difference

When I see discussions of high end audio equipment, I can't help but be reminded of the commentary from Ethan Winer and Co with regards to subjective A/B test of related equipment, and the information bias of human perception when it comes to audio 'preferences'. The part at the beginning about the...

Just one error, the midrange driver is from SEAS, specifically the W22EX001, not Scan-Speak.

Are you doing RIAA EQ on the PC or digitizing after analog EQ? I use a Linn Kairn preamp which has both MM and MC inputs w/ RIAA, of course. It's an excellent preamp. Re: Passive Cooling vs Silent Cooling for my purposes

Generally, the accepted practice if choosing to use a highly regulated linear PSU for an audio server is to place it outboard of the case. The question is why choose a linear PSU? Switching PSUs have been used in many high end components for years -- nay, decades. The famous Hypex guys offers SMPS ...

There were discussions in the past about Live End Dead End rooms -- in which one end of the room is fully padded to absorb as much acoustic energy as possible -- and the rest of the room is live. None of this is directed at you Mike and I don't think we really disagree all that much.  I used to demonstrate the superiority of Naim amps by swapping in another amp in a Linn/Naim system, which usually lead to a drop in subjective sound quality most people could hear. But here's where...
