i thought my system was running very cool untill a bios upgrade showed that the cpu tem the mobo was reporting was from the pcb and not the on die temp. its possible that the cpu measure you have is for that, and that the 'true' die temp ins much much higher - mine was running at around 65oC and i t...

a Si diode will cause a drop of 0,7v, but im fairly sure that they do this as soon as they start to conduct current, therefore you would have no current for the fans untill sufficient current had been injected into the depletion region within the diode to overcome its (small)resistance to a forward ...

i had a thought, and a real scrappy cct on a piece of napkin, im faily sure that you could build really simple little cct for a few pence perhaps £1, using a few passive components a transistor and a relay. if you monitor the back emf on the fan, if its over a certain value the transistor switches t...

@GamingGod - my tv drives me mental with its whine (so high pitched and piercing) i was once told to open it up and poke at things with a pencil (while on) untill it stops the whine, then just put a shed load of silicon on the offending component. i havent managed to get that far yet, i keep hitting...

ok i have been thinking, granted the capacitor was a stupid idea, i should have used thought and anot a guess. however, what if you were to put some sort of passive second order filter, perhaps a Chebyshev or Butterworth filter, can remember which one, but i think butterworth. as i recal they have a...

putting a capacitor across a fan terminal...
this may belong in the briefing room, however, it occured to me last night that if i were to put a capacitor accross the +ve and -ve wires of my panaflo's they may start reliably at 5v. My thinking was - at 5v there is not enough to start some of the fans. so the capacitor will charge quickly, when ...

sorry, no i was saying that the bios update gives me a new reading of 38/58/98ish depending on which of the three temp sensors types i choose to use under mbm5. i think that the 58oC reading is correct. i was under the assumption prior to the bios update that the temperature (that now transires to b...

an aditional thought occurs: i have two cpu temps now the high one is the on die temp and the other is the pcb temperature. this is around 36oC. the case temp and this cpu temp is set to sensor 'winbond 1' and 3 respectively. if i set the die temp one to winbond 2 the temp shows as 98oC (im hoping t...

A Warning on CPU temps and Bios version
this may be common knowledge but i have just got a bit of a shock. i thought my cpu (p4 2.53) was running at aroud 36oC folding. i was having few BSOD's that i couldn't find error codes for so i thought id update my bios. I have an albatron 845pe pro II, a board i am happy with - allows undervolting...

...those little power blocks you get to power all the peripherals on your machine, they come in 12v, 5v 3v etc and i know they dont provide much power but they are almost completely silent(some have a faint buzz if you press your ear against them). could you not use lots of them to run your pc? with...

if you still cared Alistair the noise that comes frm those microswitches in a mouse is due (as far as i know anyway) to the electrical contact being made by bending a small circle of metal/plastic onto a contact to make an electrical conection, then the switch springs back(over a very short distance...

you make a fair point, however i did use a noiseblocker for a time in place of the zalman(which is a 92mm fan not 120mm - i dont know where i got that from!!) and the main noise source was without a shadow of a doubt the exhaust and the psu exhaust (@5v). the noise blocker i have running currently a...

i have jsut today recieved three of the panaflo lia's. i previously had 4 S2's running in my sytem and a zalman 120mm @ 3.5v. i have to say that the panaflos seem to push much more air at much less noise at a higher voltage. initially i had 1 S2 on a front intake blowing over 2 'cudas mounted in a h...

i am curently runnning my zalman fan at around 3volts. mine seems to cool my cpu adequatly and starts everytime(although its connected to the cpu fan mobo header just in case) this has cut the noise down in my setup to easily less that that of the psu fan, hence its acceptable untill it becomes the ...

if you can get 20 for ~$10 then i may participate in the bulk order to get them sent to the uk!!! Thats about 30p a unit. all done. thats a good bit less than the uk price for even 1000 units, hence if you guys can buy direct from the supplier then it may well be cheaper to get them sent over for th...

yes im fairly sure but will send an email to them now to get confirmation. the smallest order you can make is 4 so that sort of implies its one fans worth. the 104 order is the smallest amount that falls into the second lowest price bracket. i could get 50 but that would cost around 10p more per uni...

i dont mind just sending them out in envelopes, i dont know how long they would take to get there etc, but if theres sufficient call for them i will certainly find out. the reason i bothered with this was that silicon acoustics price seems a little too much, especially to get it to the uk. so perhap...
