Re: Energy efficient Eyefinity setup

WSGF is a good place to discuss Eyefinity. Lots of people there running 3 or 6 monitors who could answer questions in more detail. http://widescreengamingforum.com/article/amd-eyefinity-faq and http://widescreengamingforum.com/forums/multi-monitor-gaming/amd-eyefinity-discussions\ would be a good st...

Re: Cheap, readily available sound meter

Another inexpensive SLM is the Polarich Smart Sensor AR-834 datalogging (ANSI 1.4 Type 2) meter for about $100 (Canadian - from NCIX) that measures from 30 - 130 dB. When rebranded by Extech it can cost several times as much. Without memory but also 30-130 dB, the AR-824 is $10 less. On Ebay by ano...

Re: How to estimate overall sound level

Good reading, thanks for the links. It sounds like my limitation at measuring things will relate to my access (or lack thereof) to an anechoic chamber. Wonder if my alma mater has one available... An inner room in a house with no windows (maybe a basement room, large bathroom, etc) could get you do...

Re: How to estimate overall sound level

Hm. I really wish I had the right low-sound environment and tools to measure sound, so I could do exactly this. Taking several components, running them while operational with and without a case, in a few different cases with and without noise-absorbing foam, would provide a wealth of information ab...

Apparently the new version is in the works and will be called Momentus XT 2.

I won't hold my breath but I'd welcome the proposed improvements.

Re: Seagate Momentus XT: The Best of Both Worlds?

Time has moved on, the SSD caching on the Z68 chipset removes the need for hybrid drives. It functions better and removes several of the downsides e.g. you can defrag. Not true unless you can somehow magically replace the millions upon millions of existing motherboards in use in business and home P...

Re: Do voltmeters give accurate information?

Hello I'd like to check how much power my work PC uses, and am thinking of getting a voltmeter . However, I was told that voltmeters aren't reliable with PCs because their PSU is more complex than basic power supplies like those for a fridge. I don't have the technical knowledge to tell: For those ...

littlebigman -- I just noticed that the article you linked actually refers to a Kill-a-Watt as a Voltmeter, which is a total misnomer. It is a power meter. Voltmeter usually refers to a multimeter -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multimeter -- which is not useful for power measurements. Another oddi...

Re: USB3 ports on front of case

Scythe Kama Cabinet Pro is USB 2 for about $15 and has a nifty hidden storage feature.

Bitfenix USB 3.0 Front Panel - 70721 is about $25 and has four USB 3 ports.

As soon as I get a MB that has USB 3 I'll probably get a USB3 front panel.

anybody know of a cheaper front panel for USB 2 or USB 3?

Re: Overclocking Athlon X4 630 on Biostar TA790GXBE

Yeah, I don't think this will work with the X4 630, as it's multiplier locked so the only way to overclock it is to increase the FSB. If you are multiplier locked the FID won't change but you can change the DID and voltage. It can be useful for over or undervolting but it won't help you in most ove...

Re: Overclocking Athlon X4 630 on Biostar TA790GXBE

You can do the old fashion BIOS overclocking but if you do you lose out on Cool n Quiet. You literally have a hotter system, and you'll likely be dealing with more noise for little or no gain vs other methods. Myself I left the BIOS options at normal/reliable settings (no overclock during boot) then...

First impressions aren't so good, it runs about 5C hotter in games than a 4850 with AC S1 and a Slipstream at the same rpm. I wouldn't dare to use it fanless, I believe it woul...

Re: AMD A8-3850 Quad Core Desktop APU (updated July 10)

OK, here is one more idea that is totally a WAG (wild guess) The whole llano series implements what is effectively variable TDP. To do this they throttle the CPU and/or GPU based on available headroom in the total TDP for the APU combo. What if the APU is slowing down the GPU to match the bandwidth ...

The CPU and GPU are sharing that ram so if a program were using both close to equally contention could slow both down more than 20% each. Any time waiting on data means zero work. Think traffic jam vs smoothly traveling cars on a highway. The number of cars doesn't change anywhere near the ratio of...
