Modder's mesh for dummies
Hi I recently made some changes to my rig, got rid of my Corsair HX520 that had the bad habit of ramping up under high load, and replaced it with an Antect NeoHE 650W (overkill, I know :p). Inspired by Mike's Model One and the rig he built for his friend in Thailand , I also ordered some modder's me...

I don't blame corsair, but dumb users and "experts" who don't know what they are talking about. Corsair is a company that wants to make money - if they don't have a product in a given market segment, then they are losing money. If newbie x reads on a forum that he needs an 850 watt or higher psu fo...

1. I don't really think the stock damping is really useful. Probably better than nothing, but it won't make a huge difference. 2. Dampening a Solo with AcoustiPack Deluxe is really easy. I'm not a DIY-guy at all, but I had no problem. Don't try to rip off the existing damping, just cover it with you...

You might have trouble booting from your SATA optical drive when in RAID mode. It's as stupid as it gets, but with my Asus A8N32SLI-Deluxe, I can only boot from my SATA optical drive when in non-RAID mode (but it's not an option for you since you'll want to install your OS on your RAID array), or wi...

Re: New build, hoping to get advice on CPU, cooling options
I'd say definitely Intel; their "performance/power" ratio is better than AMD's these days (let's hope it'll change someday so that there's some kind of healthy competition and price drops ;)). Scythe and Thermalright heatsinks are huge, that's true, but they're really good. The Scythe Ninja is not r...

I'm not *that* experienced, and I my opinion may be biased (I'm a (very) happy Solo owner), but from what I can judge on the product description page, the NSK3480 has not many advantages (except its small size, since it seems to be an advantage for you). The separation between the PSU and the rest o...

Could be... Though I'm sure many people won't be tempted to buy the Designer 500 because of its questionable looks and its included PSU. I'd be interested to know if Fry's will still sell Solos in, say, 6 months...Fungi wrote:I'd assume they're getting rid of Solo stock to make room for the new Designer.

Re: Thanks
Thanks for the information. Sorry about not replying sooner, I got busy with college and stuff. I was looking at the P182. I was worried about heat issues with it though since I like to run my CPU with 38 C or lower temperature. Is that possible with the P182? If it's possible in another case, with...

Welcome to SPCR! Sparle makes a 1-slot, passively cooled 8800GT :) http://www.sparkle.com.tw/product_detail.asp?id=57&sub_id=152 EDIT : That being said, it most probably requires room at the back of the card, but that's a motherboard issue, not really a case issue, is it ? EDIT2 : If you don't trust...

I don't know if windows vista can handle 4gb ram. The 64bit edition can, but not all software is supported on 64bit windows. I have a buddy running (4x1GB) in Vista 64, and with his motherboard only 3GB will show up. Fiddling around with BIOS settings, he is able to make Vista see all 4GB, but then...

Please don't confuse process (nanometers) with reducing power. The process makes the transistors smaller, but that doesn't inherently mean that the processor will be lower power. While Penryn is 45nm, the results are mixed on power so far. Desktop parts show an improvement in some areas and server ...

Re: Tomshardware: Quiet?
According to... http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/29/geforce_8800_gt/page13.html#noise_level the 8800 GT is pretty much on par with the 8800 GTS. As to how accurate or discriminating his techniques really are... *shrugs* But, at the least, this seems to indicate that the 8800 GT won't be a leaf b...

Zalman's site is currently down, so I cannot verify my claims, but last time I read the product specs, it didn't support recent hardware like yours, especially the graphics card. I don't know if the PSU is replaceable either. Furthermore, this is a VERY costly product. You could build an almost sile...

To answer your question about SmartDrive : the suspension mounts do a great job at silencing up to three HDDs, and it's free. Silencing three HDDs with SmartDrives is not only very costly, but will also take a lot of space in your case (probably more than you can afford in a Solo). I bought a SmartD...

I've always used the paste that came with the heatsink. If I were to buy paste separately, I'd buy Arctic Ceramique, as this appears to be the easiest to apply correctly. It doesn't matter how good the inherent properties are if you don't apply it correctly. That's a nice feature of the ZM-STG1, it...

As for the brand, Zalman claims that its thermal grease (ZM-STG1) is better than other "high performance thermal grease". I read some reviews that compared it with AS ones and Zalman was a clear winner. This might need to be confirmed by other sources, though. http://www.tipidpc.com/viewtopic.php?ti...

A Antec NeoHE product line comparison?
I love Antec NeoHE PSUs since I realised they allow you to create an artificial separation between your PSU and the rest of your case with a standard layout (by using a duct, as in SPCR Model One). What remains unclear to me, is how getting a higher-power model can help further reduce the noise. Fro...
