Replace the fan. You're going to have to eventually (it seems to die pretty quick) so might as well save your ears from the noise now. Alas, you void the warranty if you replace the fan, though. What case are you planning on with this build?

Good to hear, I chose the e5200 for it's low power draw, but I haven't been keeping up with PC hardware developments for the past few years. Is the e7xxx more power hungry? Not by much. HDD - go for the WD 640GB SE16. 2 platters instead of 3 in the 750, faster and quieter. Or, go up to the 3 platte...

What about Nvidia 9300M (not yet available but looks like it will be) and Intel US15W (actually available, but apparently not for retail)? You are certainly correct, for the time being, but 2009 should bring some changes. The Nvidia 9300M/Ion platform sounds nice, but that'll only happen if Intel t...

Thanks for the reply. I sent an email to Enzotech and made some inquiries regarding the SLF-1 and CNB-S1. I'm impressed with their quick response. Apparently, it's hard to replace the fan included with the SLF-1 and fin spacing is 1.18mm so the stock retention clip is unlikely to fit. The CNB-S1 see...

Thank you very much for the exhaustive analyses. If the 2TB WD20EADS was already out, that would have been my choice (assuming a max cost of 15 cents/GB). Unfortunately, it's not and I want to get started on the HTPC now. I think I'll go with the WD10EACS. From the reviews, it seems Newegg has been ...

Which hard drive?

I'm building an HTPC and I plan on using a 5400RPM drive for OS. Hence, I want something that's low-power and quiet while still being relatively fast. Among the following 3.5" 5400RPM drives (WD6400AACS, WD10EACS, WD10EADS), how would you arrange them in terms of: a. fastest performance (1-fastest, ...

From what I can see, the guy spent a small fortune on RAM. In fact, more than half his budget went to RAM. Fortunately, RAM prices have gone down and instead of paying $835 for a kit of Crucial 8GB FB-DIMMs, it's down to $380 which is less than half the original price. You could save even more by go...

Just fired up the mini-itx build. Northbridge fan is dead so need a replacement now. Amazingly enough, it didn't shut down right away. I only knew it was dead when I opened Speedfan and saw both fans were at 0 and some really high temps (processor was at 82C). I don't have enough vertical clearance ...

The northbridge fan on my board is near death and bugging me with its loudness. I'm pretty tolerant when it comes to noise but this is like 5 times louder than 2 Antec TriCools (1x120mm, 1x140mm) on high - at least that's what it sounds like to me. Temps are also much higher than I'm comfortable wit...

Good to know that its durable and has fought the test of time and won, have you tried it under Fista.? The V is designed for business use, iirc and loses the HD hardware accelerated decode.

Just wondering, what's the power consumption of your rig? I'm thinking of doing something similar with a Celeron 440 and I'm wondering about the power consumption vs. a low power AMD chip. Not sure who you're asking, but my system is ~80W idle and ~140W with drives thrashing (parity check). I blame...

The only reason I recommended the Atom board/CPU combo was because I was under the impression they were a new revolution in low-power computing, without such a compromise in performance like with VIA C7 and C3 offerings. That and I had read a blog post a or a web article that was specifically about...

I use unRAID for my media storage server. It was extremely simple to set-up (much easier than installing Windows) and it's working great for me so far. The OS runs off of a flash drive and doesn't require much processing power (I use a Celeron 430). Kinda picky about hardware, though (motherboards, ...

Nope, this one has 4 375GB platters. It's really fast. I'm using them in an unRAID server and during parity check, I got around 83MB/s and that's because parity was slowed down by a Samsung Spinpoint F 1TB drive in my array at some point. Another guy who was using all-1.5TB drives in his system got ...

Probably. I don't see the detailed specs for the bundled PSU on the manufacture's page. The key isn't so much what the total Wattage is but how much is available on the 12V rail -- sometimes this is surprisingly low on these cheap bundled PSU. Knowing the detailed specs is the only way to tell for ...

Do you have an idea of actual spin-up current required for notebook drives? I assume they also consume more power during start-up than when they're actually in use, right?
