Wow, heatsink modding your PSU? Impressive! :D That sure is a restrictive environment for an axial! I personally don't use fan guards. As for the negative pressure, maybe having a semi-duct of sorts to shielding it from the CPU area so it can draw air more directly from your case intake would help. ...

'04 Era 2600+ Barton Rig. Later Updated to 120mm and Si-97.

Post needs to be tweaked, but this should do the trick for now. 7/29/08. Concised down a little more: 7-30-08, 7-31-08 Well, here's all the photos I took way back when for this rig. Just now getting around to posting them lol. Certainly not astounding by todays standards, nor nearly as quiet ...

Hum, well 1500rpm 80mm Scythe here runs at about a third of it's 12v rpm when run at 5v. So I may just go with the 2500rpm version and run it at 5v. ~800rpm isn't a lot of airflow for 80mm, but indeed I'm not going to be taxing this PSU. And it should beat going with a passive-via-casefan setup. :) ...

Did you by any chance split out the tach wire and connect it to your motherboard? I'm interested in how high, rpm wise, the fan ramps up, even under the heaviest load. The PSU in question is actually an EarthWatts 380 as well, so you at least tempt me to go with the built-in controller. The lack of ...

How much CFM is needed for a 80mm Power Supply?

I've gotten used to working almost exclusively with 120mm fans, so I'm a bit out of my element with 80mm configs. I'm going to be replacing a 80mm fan in an old-style, 80mm PSU; I'm just not sure what kind of rpm value (and resulting CFM) I should be looking for. Basically I'm just trying to decide ...

Based on when I used to be into WCing the blade count is not the actual factor, it's how much blade that's there. In other words, the more "whitespace" when looking down the axis of an axial fan, the poorer it will perform in a restrictive environment. Another aspect to consider is the angle of atta...

600MHz isn't that low end really. I used VectorLinux 5.0.1/5.1.1 SOHO on a 900MHz 256MB T-Bird rig for years....in fact I'm still using 5.1.1 SOHO on my modern machines including this A64 3500+ rig I'm posting from. Either are great choices lethul. I used to be a fan of the older S-Flexs, but the Slipstreams have personally become my choice for just about any use. :) Here's the master's [Mike Chin] comment on a Slipstream: " The [Scythe Slipstream 800RPM, SY1225SL12L] was tested for noise characteristics. Late to the party here, but I'm enjoying my Slipstream config. Two 800rpmers @ 6v for video card (Accelero S1) and SS-550HT One 1200rpm @ 5v for case exhaust One 1200rpm on FanMate for TRUE. The 800rpmers @ 6v start reliably and are extremely quiet. I just have them in series on a 12v line. They do ...

I'm actually disappointed with the drive, or at least my two samples anyway. There's a high frequency aspect that I just don't like about it, even when foamed up reasonably well. Certainly not a 2.5" rival. I guess it's just that for this build the loudest item is a Slipstream @ 700rpm, and since I ...

Only thing I have to add is that my slipstream fan (I only have one so could be sample varience) is louder at the same RPM than any of my Yate Loon 140mm fans. Did you mean to compare the 140 mm YL to the 120mm Slipstream, or was that a typo? Going 140mm isn't necessarily a bad idea given that Fari...

I assume you are referring to the RevB? The Cu (and org sample) obviously beats it out at <=~500rpm. Based on the old HR-01 review, I imagine the HR-01Plus would perform better than the U120E when, say, a Slipstream 800rpm @5v is the fan config choice. I guess the question though in that case would ...

I'm looking at the Thermalright HR-01 Plus as well for a new build. I sure it will be an excellent choice for when I'm running a Slipstream at ~400rpm on, but my real concern is just how poorly it will perform compared to the Ultra120X when I crank the rpms up and start playing with the E8400s OC po...

What Mobo/CPU for a NAS-dedicated PC build?

I'm looking at getting a NAS, and particularly the QNAP TS-209Pro at the moment. The $400 price tag and the limit of drives, raid options, and filesystems are encouraging me to look into a bespoke PC build as NAS units like the ReadyNAS series are just simply out of my price range. The build isn't H...

Not sure how much room you have to work with, but if you do, and the case is not transparent, you could use a home-brewed 120mm to 240ishmm adapter so the outside would remain unchanged, while enabling you to have dual, side-by-side (aka not series) quieter fans.
