Perhaps a suitable compromise would be to seal the sides and edges of the foam with clear packing tape.

I'm in the process of doing so right now. I plan to build my system within the next week or so (in a Coolermaster ATC-111 case) and will outfit it with melamine foam in a month or so (after exams).
