Quiet external HDD recommendation

For back-up, I have a 120gb Iomega Firewire hdd which makes more noise (loud hum) than my (quiet) computer. The Iomega hdd came with a short custom connection cable (about two feet) so I bought a 15ft firewire extension cable to enable me to site the hdd away from my work area. Even with the extensi...

Modified Lian-Li 10: air, air, air

I have a Lian-LI 10 case containing an ASUS P4T-E mobo, 1024MB r-dram, a Matrox Parhelia 128 graphics card, a Cuda IV 80gb, and Cuda 7200.7 60gb. PSU is a Zalman APF 400W. Plenty of heat in there. The CPU has a Zalman Flower (Al/Cu) and is cooled by a Fanmated (lowest setting) Panaflo 92mm; the Parh...

Thanks everyone. I wonder if dukla2000 might be on to something in his 3). This is going to sound daft, and it doesn't quite match the facts, but I wonder if my moving the panaflo 92mm very slightly - about 25mm - to cover better the cpu Zalman flower might have done the trick. The cpu temps came do...

Thanks. I'm stumped. I tried re-booting a few times...with no problems. Switched off and left the pc for a couple of hours. Powered up again and went straight into the BIOS and hung around there for a while...no problems...then went into XP...normal boot up, no problems. Just have to try going into ...

psu auto switch off - why?

So keen is my Zalman 400w psu not to cause me any additional noise it has taken to switching itself off during boot up. The boot up gets as far as the first XP splash screen then the power dies. The Zalman is not modded in any way. When I switch the power on again there is always a perfectly normal ...

Thanks for the replies. Its not so much heat damage to the cpu I'm worried about as noise. I have a Zalman 400w which is pretty quiet until it gets warm - I should check exactly what the temp is when this happens but haven't yet. Also I have a new SilenX 400w sitting in its box because although its ...

cooler case

If I could afford it, I would like to replace the two side panels of my Lian-Li pc-7 case with custom made panels made from perforated sheet metal. I know this is blindingly obvious, but it is very noticeable how much lower the cpu and case temps are when I run my pc without a side panel. This also ...

Hi Clippet! Thanks for your advice. I will try some more experimenting - I suppose I'm getting a little tired of moving fans about! I would very much like to reduce my fans from three to two though. Can you give me an indication, please of what mobo and cpu temperatures should worry me? Right now my...

Thank you both for your advice. I have never tried a Panaflo. Are you suggesting that I should have x5 fans in my pc case? Or are you saying that I should substitute intake and exhaust fans for two of the three fans I currently have? Surely 5 fans are going to be a bit noisy? I would like to try a F...

advice on best fan combination

I would be grateful for some advice on what cooling fans to use and where to position them. I have a P4 2.6 on an Asus P4t-E mobo cooled by a Zalman Flower with a 92mm Zalman fan Fanmated to lowest speed. An 80mm Papst (also on the Zalman bracket) blowing at full onto the mobo - aimed at the heatsin...

I fitted my Silenx 14db 400w today to replace a Quiet Technology 300w.
At first listen, no whine, more hum. Plenty of heat. Will see how it runs over time.

I also have Q-Tec 300w and am in the UK.
I have a Silenx 400w coming from the States next week (I hope) and
I'll let you know if it seems any quieter.

You were absolutely right. Tried the Papst 4312MV 120mm and it does a very decent impression of a jet engine - best confined to wind tunnels. Can't see any place for this in my setup. Have replaced the Zalman 92mms with the Papst 80mms and things are definitely a little quieter. I will put in anothe...

Silenx 400w 14db (again)

I don't have a separate exhaust fan at all. Just one 80mm stamped hole in the case. Available fans are 2x Papst 80mm (NGLs), 2x 92mm Zalman, 1x 120mm Papst 4312MV. The 92mms are over Zalman hs's for the vga card and cpu. I have not tried the 120mm and was thinking of giving it a whirl as an intake f...

Silenx 400w 14db (again)

I have one arriving soon and have been taking note of the warnings in a number of threads about the need to ensure a decent case airflow with the Silenx because of its gentle fan. I have two large Barracudas sitting on top of my DVD drive (top, front)and they push out a lot of heat. Would it be bett...

dukla2000 - Thank you for your advice. I will work on the problem as you suggest. I do have a load of obstruction between fresh air and the front intake fans - stamped holes, then a wire mesh filter, then a plastic front fascia plate with small holes. I am sure this does cut down the air intake. I a...

I'd be really grateful for some advice on how to reduce the noise of my pc a little more. I use it for 2D graphics work and want it to be as quiet as possible. I have a 2.6 P4 on an Asus P4T-E mobo with a Zalman Flower hs cooled by a Zalman 92mm (and fanmate at just above the full silent setting), a...
