The 60mm and 80mm Papst fans were a disappointment. They both make the notorious Papst clicking sound. The 60mm also humms a little. The 80mm Nexus fan on the other hand is quite a pleasant surprise. It's a low speed (1500 RPM) unit, so naturally it's going to be quiet, but it is REALLY quiet. No wh...

Check SurplusTraders DC Fans page. They have all sorts of stuff. I bought a hard-to-find size fan from them some time back.

Sunon KDE1206PHS1
12V, 4500 RPM, 19.2 CFM. However, operating voltage is specified as 10.2-13.8 so it's iffy that it'd even start at 5V.

Matrix Orbital VFD as Fan Controller

Is anyone using a Matrix Orbital VFD (or LCD) as a "digital baybus" for controlling fan speeds. This would be a software solution, and I would prefer a pure hardware solution, but other than that, how well does it work? It uses PWM to control fan speeds, so is it one that works quietly or one that c...

I would love to have one of these. I just became aware of this thread a few days ago. What I have is a Home Theater PC which I intend to leave running all the time. When it's not doing anything, which will be most of the time, I want it to be as quiet and energy efficient as is reasonably possible. ...

I recieved one Nexus 80mm "Real Silent Case Fan" today from SiliconAcoustics, along with an 80mm Papst 8412 N/2GL. The Papst is no quieter than any number of other fans in the box of "spare" fans. It makes a sound like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle tire. I am VERY disappointed on an abso...

They don't allow the option of Postal Service (USPS) delivery for fans. I ordered two fans and selected Postal delivery and the shipping charge was calculated as $50.00! :-)

Ralf,

Thank you for the links. It was the Ars thread that held the "answer" for me - a post from Furqan Rydhan of case-mod.com listing the RMA email and his personal email and a promise to replace any bad fans with "pre-tested" fans from new stock.

My five all say Japan.

I have ordered two from a guy on eBay. $18.50 with shipping. I should have just ordered them from Silicon Acoustics and paid the extra $7.50, but I'm a notorious sucker for an eBay auction.

Turns out I DON'T have Panaflo L1A's for comparison. I suspect the L1A's I have may not be representative of this model. I'm ordering a couple more of the 80mm L1A's from a different source.

Without the RPM signal, which the L1A's do not have, the only way I see to control the fan speed is through something like a FanMate or a rheobus or a resistor. There was a thread on something that could be placed inline to detect the fan speed, but I don't believe it ultimately worked. edit: Duh. S...

Noisy Panaflo L1A's?

I purchased five Panaflo L1A's (80mm) from an online retailer for some rediculously low price, like $3.50 each, with 3-pin tails for an additional $.01 each. But none of them are truly quiet when undervolted. These are my first Panaflo fans, so I have no reference point except other brands of fans. ...

Not specifically but a Sanyo Denki maybe? I use one of their 80x15 fans. Unfortunately these odd fan sizes can be the devil to find. I found a Panaflo 80x15 at Digi-Key. I know you said 92mm, I'm just pointing you to brands and vendors who might have a thin 92mm fan. Edit: Sanyo Denki does not make ...

Quieting fans in a 2U Power Supply

I have an ATech HTPC case with an Enermax 500W 2U power supply (model EG615P-V). The case fans and CPU fan are acceptably quiet (both are on fan controllers and running at significantly less than 12v), but the fans in the psu are a bit noisy, especially the inner 80mm fan, which I find surprising. U...

Some questions and observations. 1) Why does the psu make the whining sound? When this occurs it has obviously TRIED to start the fan, and giving the fan a little boost, by either blowing on it or reaching through the grill and giving it a jump-start, causes it to start spinning. 2) It's so quiet at...

I have a 300W Super Tornado arriving tomorrow. I leave my PC running 24x7, so even if it has this "startup" problem, it won't annoy me TOO much. What I'm hearing (reading) is that the fan DOES start spinning after the system warms up?

How does a Zalman Fanmate work?

It varies the voltage from 12v to 5v, which I assume it does by varying the resistance, but since different fans need different resistor values to drop their voltage by x volts, if it were simply a rheostat, some fans would be running > 5v at the lowest setting and others < 5v. So does it factor in ...

That's a great price, but you do have to fork out $179.99 and then apply for the $80 mail-in rebate. I knew there were $20 rebates, but this says $80 Mfr. Mail-in Rebate.
