Re: GTX 1050 Ti review compilation thread

This Hardwareluxx review (in German) provides a head-to-head comparison of the 2-fan ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte and Zotac 1050 Ti cards (also lists the EVGA 1050 Ti SC on the comparison graphs).

Re: GTX 1050 Ti review compilation thread

Has anyone got any further info on what of the many 1050/1050 TIs are quietest? I've not been able to find out, but google brought me to this thread, where it seemed like people interested in knowing might be likely to congregate. Head-to-head comparison between the Gigabyte GTX 1050 Ti G1 Gaming 4...

Re: Isolated PSU in Fractal Define C

About semi-passive (or passive) ATX units, IIRC there's nothing below the 550W capacity... Seasonic does a number of passive PSUs in the sub-550W range (400, 460 & 520W). They are generally sufficiently efficient (80plus Platinum -- 94% minimum efficiency at 50% load on 230V), that it shouldn't be ...

Re: Newcomer Here - Hardware Tips

Nonetheless that warning is actually pointless. Does anybody actually have hard data (e.g. comparative temperature readings for the different orientations) to back this up? That fanless PSUs produce so little heat that they do not even need active convection to dissipate it does not seem beyond the...

Re: Newcomer Here - Hardware Tips

The 460FL2 "has" to be positioned "right" side up. There's no penalty mounting it with the grille facing downwards. Seasonic state that their fanless PSUs are to be mounted right side up (and they come with a tag explicitly stating this). This is presumably so that the warm air is able to rise away...

Re: WD Red 6TB and Red 1TB (2.5-inch) HDDs

I got a "drive update not needed" response from the program, and initially the ticking continued. But after a reboot or two it seems to have gone away. I recently ran the DOS-only wdidle3 program, which actually allows you to interrogate the settings, and it shows an autopark time of 5 minutes.

Re: WD Red 6TB and Red 1TB (2.5-inch) HDDs

I recently bought the WD Red 1TB 2.5". I've been having trouble with it going through an extended period of periodic 'ticking' after booting up, before settling down. I have since discovered that this may be due to excessively-aggressive autoparking of the heads, and am currently backing it up prior...

Re: Tower CPU heatsinks with widely-spaced fins <120mm?

Are there any tower CPU heatsinks, other than the Thermalright HR-01 Plus and Scythe Ninja Mini (both of which are discontinued), that have widely-spaced fins (for low airflow operation) and are less than 120mm in width ? What about skimming any well made SPCR article? Look at the tables: http://ww...

Re: Tower CPU heatsinks with widely-spaced fins <120mm?

The reference to Xeon for the Thermalright HR-01X is because the last ones were made with those fittings only (X for Xeon?). Using the Thermalright VX BTK II Bolt-thru Mounting kit allows the HR-01X to be fitted to 1150, 55 and 56, and 2011 CPU sockets. Available from several sources including the ...

Re: Tower CPU heatsinks with widely-spaced fins <120mm?

Maybe the Thermalright Macho 120 , which is a smaller version of the HR02, but should be slightly less effective as less area to dissipate the heat. Yeh, it's already on my list for one 'candidate' for a build. But being able to reduce the width from exactly 120mm to less than 120mm opens up some o...

Re: Haswell heat-minimisation advice

Why does a SB-based i3 rig force you to leave the window open? How high is your room temp with PC off and with PC on? I tend to open a window when the temperature rises above 25C, which has happened only once this (Southern hemisphere) spring (26C). The temperature in my room at the moment (having ...

Re: Haswell heat-minimisation advice

In a roomy mATX case like the TJ08B-E and with a good HSF you will be fine with any i3 out there. How is it that you have heat issues with your current setup? Without context it's difficult to help. I had thought that I'd provided the context in my first post. The problem is not heat dissipation fr...

Re: Haswell heat-minimisation advice

Abula, let's clear the irrelevancies out of the way: 1) No , I won't be putting my existing CPU into my new build. This would (i) mean that I'd lose access to a working computer while rebuilding (problematic, if something goes wrong) & (ii) I would be left with close to everything but a CPU in old p...

Haswell heat-minimisation advice

Hi. I'm looking at the possibility of building a smaller, cooler-running, and hopefully quieter system. It will be used mostly for watching videos and web-browsing, with some light gaming and occasional bouts of video transcoding. I'm currently running an i3 2120 (TDP 65W), which seems to handle my ...

Re: Silentest 180mm Fan possible

I have ordered the Phobya 180mm LED fan (going to cut of the led part) but it might take 1-2v for me to get it. If you want a review i can report back. I know that this is an old thread, but I'm curious as to how easy cutting out the LEDs turned out to be. I'm looking at the possibility of the Phob...
