Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?
People are so used to the windows desktop, trying to force people to change is daft things like Metro need to be introduced slowly. No matter how much some people proclaim to like change there talking BS humans like familiarity, when people have problems even shutting down there PC they will get fru...

Re: Connect Schythe S-flex 1600 RPM to ZALMAN FAN MATE 2
Im probably missing something but a http://coolpc.com/3-Pin-Y-Adapter/M/B0002EXHQ8.htm is only going to add $0.98 to the cost of a fanmate if order from the same place.embedded wrote:thanks but this cable makes it expansive.

Re: format/wipe SSD
You don't even need a operating system installed to access diskpart,
It can be done when you boot up using the windows 7 install media just hit Shift+F10 and it will bring up a command prompt.
This helped me out a few times when things had gone horribly wrong

Re: format/wipe SSD
doesn't your ssd manufacturer provide a tool to wipe the drive ? I have a OCZ drive and there toolbox lets you wipe it returning it to factory settings, blanking the drive. Not that you should need to, just treat it like you used to with your HDD, i don't think formatting programs know if its a SSD ...

Re: Replacement NB heatsink
Cant the HDT-D1284 be mounted in any direction?,
if so just mount it in such a way as to miss the heatsink, maybe with the curved part of the heat pipes facing towards the VRM's

Re: Nexus Real Silent 120mm motor buzz?
Does cutting out the metal grill have a real effect on noise or air flow? Depends on the grill, if the noise characteristic doesn't change when the fan is running in clear air then cutting out the grill will likely have little effect. Its not normal for Nexus or any good fan to wear out in 9 months...

Re: Nexus Real Silent 120mm motor buzz?
Have you tested it without the intake restriction of the case, when one of my fans ramp up it makes noise but i know this is due to restriction on the intake. If its silent when not attached to the case, try lowering the fan speed if you can get away with it, its either that or going to the pains of...

Cheapest i know is Zalman fanmate, but it doesn't go down to 0v, think lowest is 5vENSLAVER wrote:Also would be awesome if someone could recommend a 'cheap' 0v-12v controller without annoying LEDs
Had a look around, don't know if you can get them where you are but Sunbeamtech Rheobus
goes down to 0v

Seeing as the last update to this sticky was almost 2 years ago, and a few of these business are no longer around. Thought i would update things a little. When this thread was first started silent PC components where difficult to find, but just under 10 years on and as edh said Nowadays it's easier ...

Re: Sticky for the UK
Anyone know if this sticky is still updated, The OP Bat hasn't logged on since 2010
A lot of the vendors listed seem to have gone the way of the Dodo
Is it still worth posting about what vendors are available in the UK?

Re: How to detect/observe CPU power (thermal) throttling?
I couldn't sleep thinking over what the OP was asking about, The question may look rather obvious, but seemingly I'm not able to actually detect any change in cores clock frequency (I've used AMD OverDrive 4.2.1, CPU-Z 1.57, RMClock 2.3.5 and Throttle Watch 2.02), expectedly due to thermal throttle ...

Re: How to detect/observe CPU power (thermal) throttling?
I found this handy info on Intel's way of controlling things when a CPU starts to cook its self, its a little technical and goes into a fair bit of detail. Thermal-Management-Logic-and-Thermal-Monitor-Feature The short version if you don't want to be bored by Intel documents, there are two basic way...

Re: How to detect/observe CPU power (thermal) throttling?
Not sure about AMD, Ive only used this on i7.
But Ive used ThrottleStop in the past, there is also some good info on the ins and out of thermal throttling.

Re: GTX 670 launched
I have to agree with Spacey, bought the Gigabyte Windforce my self, i have three 120mm Noctua NF-P12 running at 900prm one each for intake and exhaust and one for the CPU. When idle the three fans on the Windforce only spin at 700rpm I'm seriously impressed with it, the only caveat is when the fans ...

It seems there maybe a small reservoir built into a very similar unit, although im guessing its so small that its of little use, the pump is meant to be used in a totaly closed (sealed) system. pdf27, kindly clears up what a volume compensator is for me at the bottom of this post :) http://forums.si...

Maybe if someone knows how to source Apple components It should be no surprise to many that this version of the Laing DDC pump is based on the OEM Apple G5 2.5 GHz liquid cooling system that Delphi supplies to Apple. The main difference between the Apple G5 version of the pump and the Swiftech MCP35...
