Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

But what you quoted from andyb was describing the metro interface NOT Windows 8 as a whole. For completeness... So like I said, Metro Screen is nothing more than a significantly reworked Start Menu. I agree with you in principle, but it actually goes way beyond that, it also replaces the start bar, ...

What makes me laugh is he is so enthusiastic about how you can customize the colors and background picture on the start screen and how you can now multi task, running two or more programs at a time....

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

save for a few small annoyances it's every bit as good or better than Win7. I have to ask in what way is it better than Win7 ? If you are going to install a start menu replacement and boot straight to desktop why not just use Win7. All i ever see are reasons not to use Win8, things like the flat co...

Re: Preferred SSD Brand These Days?

Finally, I have an old Kingston V+200, which has been perfectly fine too. Oddly, despite being probably the slowest during benchmarking, it "feels" the fastest. I think that's because people put to much earnest on Mbps, when latency and IOPS are more important with regards to SSD's when used for a ...

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

My favorite quote on Windows 8 came from Tim Cook, chief executive of Apple Windows 8 would be like combining a toaster and a fridge – something that, while technically possible, was “probably not going to be pleasing to the user” Even though he said this before launch, i think he was spot on. While...

Re: More RAM or better I/O

Have you thought about a extension to tame Chromes memory usage ? I found this one, The Great Suspender that allows you to suspend a tab manually or after a set amount of time. If not i would go for more ram before a SSD as even though a SSD will speed things up its still going to be swapping RAM to...

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?

I think the main problem people have with 8 is that it doesn't bring any advantages over 7 unless your using a touch interface, some would argue that unless your using touch it actually has some disadvantages.

Re: Preferred SSD Brand These Days?

Not that many people will agree with me, but i have not had any problems with my Vertex 3. I think what Abula said about OCZ being unreliable used to be true when they used the SandForce SF-2200 controller with early firmware, then SandForce sent out firmware updates. As for being careful with the w...

You could use spare the 5.25 CD bay to suspend one drive and like Vicotnik said put the other one on a foam block, or suspend it from under the 3.5 floppy bay.

But the difference with GM crops is the possibility that these test may contaminate normal crops and there is no way back once this happens. From my understanding of the Monsanto bill, this cross contamination is exactly what people are concerned about. In that if the GMO happened to find it way int...

They might be apprantly staight lines but they are in reality curves. A curve can never be a straight line. My head just popped like a balloon when i read that :P A little longer than that actually, it's been in Geforce cards since Geforce FX although some lower end cards without temperature monito...

Technically this isn't a curve, it's a straight line. Well technically all curves are straight lines if you get close enough  This depends on card. I've had some which only give artefacts at 115C and others that give artefacts as low as 80C. I think some more modern cards are more fragi...

That it goes up as it gets hotter until the fan is spinning just fast enough to keep the card from down clocking or crashing ?

@washu, Ahhh ok i think i get it now. NVMe is a unified driver for PCIe cards so manufactures don't have to develop there own drivers. @nutball, Nice find and a good read, Thanks. Is this not where NVMe comes in ? from my understanding there will be both normal (AHCI) SSD'd and NVMe drives that appear to the system as a PCIe connected device.

Re: are pci-express ssd worth over sata?

Like CA_Steve said and IMO PCIE SSD are not worth the money, but if you realy want one PCIe-based Vector SSD manages 1GB/s in transfer speeds. But personally i would wait for SATA Express as Mats said, as this will raise the current ceiling of 0.6GB/s to 1GB/s as well as a host of other improvements...

From what you said i would go for build 1. Also the "No space inside for more drives" is kinda a ...
