If your processor has fairly low heat output, you could even work out a fan-duct type thing (Dell-style) with the PSU and a Zalman flower cooler and then put a thermally-controlled fan in the PSU that would speed up when the going got tough. Gainward makes a GeForce4 MX440-based board that is low pr...

The other issue here is that the metal exterior and distinctive stamped rear grille style are also present on both the Nexus NX-3000 and the Verax 300W because these power supplies use a Fortron chassis. The only sign that some power supplies show that they are being pushed close to their limit is t...

New Car Smell
That's just the smell of chemicals they use on the circuit boards and stuff for various reasons. It's a lot like "new car smell", and it si definitely nothing to worry about. Unless the smell is really acrid and you can smell it powerfully from the user position (which I would assume is at least six...

Yeah
The fan on the PN series IS silent, though with my twin Seagate 80G Barracuda IV drives, I get some coil whine. It's livable, though. I will be using the ATV-series 300W this winter for a non-silent build. The Nexus NX-3000 looks exactly like the ATV-series from the outside but it has a different no...

Hang on, there. Your computer will have to be pretty freaking far away from the magnet on any decent woofer to not be a problem, and then the high pressure and vibration will play all kinds of hooey with the hard drive. The subwoofer motors on high-performance subs also generate their own amount of ...

Heck, why aren't there any thermal control add-ons? I know they would be a huge hit if a company like Antec made a couple tiny circuit boards - one that is for the silence crowd (5v Low-8v High) and one that is for the performance crowd (7v Low-11.5v High). Just plug 'em in-line on the 3-pin connect...

Folding now ... Need to optimize cooling
I just joined the SPCR Folding@Home team, and I noticed that my PSU fan is running a bit faster than it was. I have two Panaflo L1As in the front of my case (in the HDD cage and in the spot below that) and I was wondering if I could improve things by moving the L1As to the rear of the case, and stil...

I don't like the litigious attitude Thermalright is taking about its product. It seems like they are trying to scare away potential competitors so that they won't have to compete. This ultimately stifles innovation because other companies are less likely to try and improve upon Thermalright's design...

Weight concerns usually come into play when a computer will be moved/shipped. If you are using your computer in your studio, odds are it isn't going anywhere. Go with the second solution. If you are concerned about spacing, I don't think that the SLK800 is exactly 80mm wide. It is probably slightly ...

rtype: given the different positionings of CPUs on motherboards and different fan sizes that are available for their coolers, it is almost impossible (certainly too difficult as to be feasible) to come up with a CPU ducting solution that would be sure to fit the wide range of motherboards, processor...

I included the griles on the front and on the rear because with the single hole at the end of the duct in the rear, the fans need to spin too quickly to generate the pressure necessary to force the air out the rear, and air velocities are still quite high. If I lower the backpressure on the fans, th...

What do you think about the idea of opening up more vent space in the back and with the front intakes and exhausts as shown in my drawings? The front ventillation openings on top and on bottom certainly do give the case a distinctive look, in my opinion. The other feature I propose is moving the eas...

this is definitely not your average case.
Okay, from what little I had to go on, here's what I came up with: http://newfoundrory4.tripod.com/radian/nb1398case.htm I know it's only a mid-tower, but stretch it vertically and it miraculously becomes a full-tower case. (that is to say that a full-tower version can easily be worked out from the ...

I also like 1398's case design, except for that little vent hood over the power supply. Given the advent of today's silent (in some cases, fanless) power supplies, I think that the vent hood over the power supply is unnecessary and crosses the threashold of diminishing returns. If it is offered, it ...

yeah, new board and RAM will be what I do as well. Right now my HSF (a ThermalTake Volcano 9 HS with low-speed NMB fan on it) is keeping my CPU at about 51 degrees C. How far do you suppose I could go with this HSF before I start exceeding its limits? I was hoping to go up to at least a 2800+ Barton.

Upgrading CPU at the end of the year - question
What is a Socket-A XP-series CPU with heat output about the same as an AMD Duron 1GHz? Is there one? I am trying to find out if I can still get away with my old silent HSF on the new processor. It is a Volcano 9 with one of the 8cm NMB fans from Directron. (almost silent, but definitely a lot quiete...

Quick question to dual-fan PSU owners with metal cases
Does the top panel of your computer case ever become warm after leaving the machine running for a long time? I notice that since my case has an area in the top where warm air can collect, the top panel becomes very warm to the touch, especially without rear case fans. Oh well, switching to Fortron 3...
