Centrino of the desktop!

Post by wheredoibegin » Mon Feb 16, 2004 4:00 am

Found this on www.theinquirer.net, this is a very exciting prospect for the silent computing crowd.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=14162
CHIP FIRM Intel will this week announce details about a new wave in desktop computing using the Centrino bundle...

even better ...
The INQ understands that the Pentium M is such a successful chip that in 2005 Intel may integrate the low wattage CPU cores into one four way die.
now, what's the reputation of this website concerning rumors/... ? would that be too good to be true ?

Take any story theInq writes with a grain of salt... better make that a cup of salt, actually. ;)

Ahh, at last! Imho this was only a matter of time. I wouldn't wonder if the demand is much higher than the supply. Prescott will have a hard time...

I find the Prescott so ridiculous that I will not give any tips to Prescott owners how to make their PC silent without changing the CPU.

I suppose we'll know in a week if it is true. I know my fingers are crossed

The price will be interesting, intel has a great product here and might just charge accordingly :(

As for the prescott, apparently a new stepping is on the way soon that should get thermal envelope down to something respectable. I like the idea of prescott at the top end with pentium-M for those of us who don't need to be able to factor large primes and heat our entire house at once.

all I can say is THANK GOD. It's about time--it'll be exciting to see what sort of performance vs. power consumption these chips provide compared to their P4 bretheren.

....I'd REALLY like to jump on this bandwagon, though...

wheredoibegin,

grrreat!

Beyonder,

Actually they've been known for some time already.

Power consumption comparison real world:

Power consumption comparison (thermal specifications):
http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewto ... 3022#33022

Performance comparison benchmarks:

It's just that Intel has made it really difficult to release Pentium M designs for the desktop. Some industrial type (expensive) mini-itx form factors have existed for months now, but a real "made for consumer desktop" reference design from Intel would be greatly welcomed.

I wouldn't mind a desktop Dothan (next generation Pentium M) with minimal cooling at 2Ghz. It would be powerful enough for even games.

It'll be interesting to see if Taiwanese manufacturers jump on this bandwagon and what kind of real world performance gains can be achieved with the 855 chipset.

regards,
Halcyon

PS "Pentium -M" is not the same as "Pentium M". See above

Has anyone heard any news on this front from IDF this week?

This is cool, but you have to wonder how cool/warm this chip will be. It's integrating four cores afterall. Powerful, low wattage cores, but I'd not get to excited about any chip until it's released and evaluated by independant sources.

Still no news on google on Friday afternoon. Guess RaynorWolfcastle may have a point in being skeptical. Hopefully all that the Inquirer got wrong is the timeframe.

Talz, I think they mean release Centrino for desktop immediately, followed by a 4 core CPU in 2005.

I read somewhere about a wifi chipset for desktop. I fear that maybe thats what they were pointing to with this centrino thing and not pentium M at all :( i hope i am wrong.

Unfortunately it looks like another industrial board with no AGP slot, integrated onboard video and some sort of proprietary ("LFP (Local Flat Panel) LVDS Interface") video out port.

Bummer man. :(

Yep. Tell me about it :(

I know that Intel must be sitting on full ATX reference board designs and who knows, maybe even better chipsets.

I'm just not sure they will release them untill they've finally launched their own "performance rating" system (really soon now), confused the consumers and finally figured out themselves how to launch Pentium M without killing the Pentium 4 cashcow.

So, we wait....
