need some advice on needing a zalman 123 or 165 for video

Post by calam63 » Mon May 31, 2004 7:36 am

i am thinking of putting a a64 system together - with a zalman 7000 at the lowesdt speed setting - having either a 80mm or 120 mm exhaust fan (undervolted) and having a ps with a modded undervolted fan. my question is do you think i will need a zalman 123 or 165 with a undervolted fan if i were to get a fanless 9800 pro (sapphire one) if i do do you think or how do you think the fan will compare if i got a hightech 9800 pro that has the vga silencer on it? thanks all

The FB165 comes with an 80mm 3 pin Zalman fan and a 5v resistor for quite operation and is gr8t for cooling a video card with a heatpipe or any other pci cards. I use one to keep my ATI 9700 Pro/ZM80HP combo cool.

The FB 123 is more flexible with fan sizes (any size works) and useful for cooling other parts or using multiple fans.

Does the Sapphire 9800 Pro version include the newer style heatpipe that has mounts for the slim Zalman 80 mm fan? If it does, then there's another option.

I have no opinion on the vga silencer thingie.

That has the fan mounts on the left or top side.

I'd recommend the fan option as the heatpipe will introduce more heat into the inside of the case. Personnally I like my video card heatpipe as it's a much more effective cooler that the stock HSF but it does raise the case temps.

You can try it with out the fan and see if it works OK, if it gets too hot then buy the fan kit.

You can also underclock that card with powerstrip for cooler temps.
