Woohoo :)

Post by Boomerang Rapido » Mon Apr 07, 2003 11:47 pm

I killed the chipset cooler on my sinxp 1394, and replaced it with the zalman NB heatsink instead.

I am now at the point where the most noticable noise from my machine is the noise of my barracuda IV working! Sure the fans are audible, but they are at a constant quiet "shhhhh". Never in a million years thought my barracuda would be the single component to catch my ear! I am one happy man :D

Enjoy your happiness, it won't last long.

Now you'll start hearing some slight tick or buzz or rumble or chattery sound that you've never heard before and it will start to bore into your head like the Chinese Water Torture.

Such is the curse of the quiet-freak. Sorry.

After I silenced my computer, I started hearing the high pitched whine of the coils in my Viewsonic 19" monitor.

:x

Needless to say, the path to silence is a vicious, brutal one.

Same thing happened to me. I've gotten the computer to a quite reasonably quiet level and now my monitor's (Samsung 19") buzzing is driving me crazy. It buzzes less if I take the frame rate down from what it lists as the optimal settings. It's the best I can do until I can afford a LCD screen or con one for my birthday.

I can't wait until LCD's are a reasonable price and have comparable colors to CRT's. I'm SOOOOOO there whenever that happens.

But until then, I LOVE the viewsonic I have. Easily the most gorgeous monitor I've ever owned.

Well, it's all relative. When I bought my monitor on '96 it was $500 for a 19" CRT and that was a pretty good deal, now it's about the same for a 17" LCD with about the same resolution, etc...

Is there such a thing as a silent monitor?

I had a Mitsibushi DiamondPro 750SB which was only audible when I got my system quiet. That was the main noise culprit even though its unhearable to the untrained ear. My family and friends could not hear the noise I was talking about.

I changed that quality unit for another quality unit, Eizo FlexScan L367 15" DVI TFT panel, very expensive unit at £350 ($500+) and there is still a very low whine that I can hear, mind you sightly quieter than the monitor I had before.

If anyone comes across a silent unit I would like to know.. When I mean silent, I mean stick you ears next to the vents and if you can hear it, then it's probably not quieter. :D

It's probably just the price matter or you could be unlucky. I have seen the higher priced 18 and 19 inch TFT models from Sony and they are completely (from what I could tell) silent. They will set you back more than a 1000 euros though :(

A lot of LCD monitors are slient.

My Samsung 191T/Dell 1900FP is completely noiseless.

I usually wear a noise cancealation headset when working on my computer. That usually does a better job than spending hundreds of dollar in parts to quiet the sucker. The headset only cost $99. Off coarse, I still spend $ on quieting my computer  .

Also the new NEC 1760V (in the states, I think they're 1700Vs in Europe) are completely silent. And they're fast, I think they're using the same screen as the Hitachi's (16ms).

I'm going to buy a pair when I get back stateside, methinks....It's SO hard to beat a good pair of headphones. My dad has a ridiculously nice stereo (all solid state, mum about passed out when he told her the bill), and I still think the 580's sound better when paired with a good source....

And they help make everything sound nice en' quiet. :D

Yep. I have a pair of 545's that sound rediculously good (plus getting em for $50 was one of the best deals I've ever made). and they still sound better than any hi-fi that I've heard recently. Let alone computer speaker set.
