How would I go about cleaning out the cake of dust that is building up between the pins of a P4 Alpha heatsink? Muchs thanks for any input!

Compressed canned air made specifically for computers. I've read that air compressors push moisture or static electricity with the air, so that is bad.
I hold my vacuum cleaner nozzle near the air coming out the side of the sink to catch the dirt coming out. HEPA filter
ALso recommended that you pull the HSF before doing this. If you do, air compressor is fine.

I left mine to long, and had to blow mine out with an airbrush filled with rubbing alcohol. Still didn't do that good a job, so spent an hour picking away at it with some small brushes.

Wouldn't running water over the heatsink be easier?

If you've caked on too much dust, water just makes mud.

I just washed an older heatsink under the tap with soap and water today. If you have the time to take it off, why not? Sure, water and dust makes mud, but mud washes off too.
Just make sure to clean the bottom with alcohol or something after you are done.

If you're taking the Alpha completely off, spray it with some automotive brake cleaner. This will clean practically anything.
