My Centurion 5 Quiet system

Post by agus_c_o » Mon Aug 15, 2005 7:26 am

Hi everyone:
This is my first post, and I want to thanks all of you, I have learned so much since I read in this forum and website.
I am from Toluca Mexico and don’t speak English very well so forgive me if I make a lot of language mistakes.

Now lets see my rig:

Specs:
MB: .................Abit KV8 Pro
CPU:................AMD Athlon 64 2800+ Zalman CNPS7000-Cu
RAM:...............Kingston 512Mbytes PC3200
GPU:................ATI Radeon 9550 @250/397Mhz 256Mbytes @200/225Mhz
.........................Zalman ZM 80D-HP
HD:...................Samsung SP0812C JVC FDB
.........................Coolermaster Cooldrive 3
CDRW:.............Samsung 52X32X52
Case:... .............Coolermaster Centurion 5
.........................1 Panaflo FBA12G12L1A
.........................1 Coolermaster A12025-12CB-5BN-L1
.........................1 Coolermaster A12025-12CB-4JN-L1
PSU: ................Aerocool AeroPower II+ 350W
FanController:...One FanMate 2 One FanMate 1
.........................One 5V/12V DIY Switch

Drive suspension:
I really wanted to suspend my hard disk but it is enclosed in a cooledrive 3 so it took me a lot of effort to find
the best way to do it. So I figured out that a PSU is a little bit wider than a 5 ¼ so y used the case of an old one.

Image

I had to mod the case to make room for the drive and a 120 mm fan, I cut the hard drive mounting and leaved
just enough of it to let me install a 3 ½ card reader unit, then I put some foam in the case to let rest the PSU case.

Here is the drive on its place.

Image

Then for the front intake fan I used anti-vibration fan-mounts but those are designed to be used in a fan with out
solid corners so y just use a small screwdriver to insert the wider part and it was good solution because the mounts
work better that way.

Here you can notice the front cutting needed for the fan.

The fan seen from the inside.

I used three 5 ¼ bays to place another 12 cm fan this time I fit it with foam an the sides were covered with
soft plastic this fan helps cooling the PSU and CPU.

The inside view of the Panaflo.

Image

I cut the exterior fan grill to let the fan blow unrestricted, you ca see the Zalman FanMates that are used to control
the CPU and exhaust fans, in the lower slot tray you can se the 5v/12v switch I did to control the two intake fans,
they are at 5 volts most of the time and at 12 volts when playing.

Image

This is the PSU is an Aerocool AeroPower II+ 350W and I am surprised how quiet it is, in fact I have never
listen to it, the most dominant sound in my system is the cpu fan and the HD wine. I think it is so quiet because
the good airflow in the system keep it very cool and it doesn’t have to ramp the fan speed, the only thing
I moded to it was removing the interior fan grill.

Image

Image

In this picture you can see the whole system. Most of the cables are sleeved.

Image

Image

This is a very quiet system at one meter the only sound is a HD whine but it disappears if I twist the computer
as shown above, with the ear at the upper bays dominates the Panaflo clicking, at the middle the CPU fan,
at the bottom ouch! The HD whine. The exhaust fan has a humming at 5 volts but disappears at 7 volts.
My temps are at idle CPU 39°, SYS 33°, PSU 28°, cpuburn in 25 min CPU 53°, SYS 33°, PSU 33°
notice that the system temp didn’t rise.
The HD is at idle 28° and 30 minutes virus scanning plus 15 minutes defragging 32°.

Get rid of that Zalman heatsink and replace it with a fanless heatsink such as the Scythe Ninja. Your army of case fans would easily keep this cool... in fact, get rid of all but one of your case fans and it'd still be cool enough.

Thanks for the suggestion but it is very dificult to find the Ninja here in Mexico and internacional orders are expensive
and I'm short of bucks right now.
The most annoying sond in my system was the hard drive's whine but I inserted the cooldrive front bazel and the whine
was reduced a lot, the temps went up 4 or 5 degrees but I can handdle it so I am leaving the bezel on.

The porpouse of the upper-front intake fan is to take cool air from the front case mesh to the CPU and PSU

The next thing I'm going to change is the 12 cm Panaflo to an other coolermaster because I can get those
very cheap and easy and at 5 or 7 volts are almost inaudibles.

Then maybe replace the CPU heat sink fan.

I made the following modifications:
Swap the heat sink fan, I broke the zalman by mistake and wasn’t able to get a nexus 92mm silent fan, so
I tried a coolermaster 80mm and I am very happy with the result, no more bearing noise. I have very low
temps at 1300 rpm and at this speed the fan is almost inaudible. (I put the zalman label in the
coolermaster fan)

Image

Next thing was get rid of the cooldrive 3 these thing is very good as hard drive cooler but I realized its
better as noise amplifier, the Samsungs whine was at least two times louder when assembled in the cooldrive.
So I have to say stay away from it.
Some where in here I saw a long time ago some one using motherboard standoffs to let his hard drive lay on
foam an let some air flow through the drive down side, so I took the idea but used two in each screw hole
to raise the drive a little more then screwed a plastic base to the standoffs and let it lay on foam too.

Next thing was swap the Panaflo FBA12G12L1A for a coolermaster (I am able to get those at a local store) and
I think those are very good fans, now I have 3 of them running at 600 rpm. And are inaudible at two feet.
Then I moded the front intake hole to let more air flow unrestricted.

The lower and upper intake fans are
surrounded by foam to eliminate any vibrations.

Very nice and clean setup :D

I think the upper 120mm intake is a very cool idea but probably unneccesary, try one thing first though, remove the lower intake fan and put the upper fan as an exhaust fan and see what happens to the temps :) Generally you only want fans blowing in or out, not both. Try it and see what happens :)

Thanks for your comments nici maybe worth a try, but now I’m lazy and kind of satisfied with my setup.
The original goals were to make a push pull configuration with the upper front intake and the rear exhaust (I’m want to get
a Scythe Ninja or a Zalman CNPS9500 an try it fan less), and the lower intake to cool the hard disk.
And at the same time create some positive pressure to keep dust out of the system.

The results so far is HD idling 5º, system 10º, and cpu 9º above ambient, and since all the fans are spinning slowly and
soft mounted the result is almost silent.

One test I’m proud to talk about is the cigarette smoke test:
You need a side panel window and interior light to do it, throw a big amount of smoke to the computer front and see how
the airflow inside the computer behaves.

In my case the lower intake air flows through the hard disk and part of the air goes directly to the video card and leaves
through the rear 12mm fan so I’m positive that this setup can handle a more powerful video card.
And the upper intake air accelerates to the rear exhaust and some air goes directly to the psu fan so no matter it maybe
isn’t the most quiet psu its doing fine because doesn’t has to speedup its fans to keep it self cool.

I wouldnt use cigarette smoke... I suppose its ok if you normally smoke inside but id rather use something else. dont know where to get something that smokes and doesnt smell too bad.

I don't normally smoke inside; in fact I don't like the smell ether but it’s an easy and safe source of smoke
(safe for your home not for your lungs)

Hi!

How did you get rid of the 3,5" drive holder rack?

I am trying to make my HDD-s more silent (2 Samsung sata)..

Drill out the rivets that hold it in place.

I then used a dremmel rotatory tool, to cut the sides and left just enough
metal to hold the memory card reader in the floppy bay. and reinstall the
cuted rack with screws

Hi, thanks for the answer!
I read about removing the rack like this... :(

Did you ever tried mointing the HDD-s in the 5.25" drive bay areas?
I also have a memory card reader in the top 3.5" bay... 8)

First I am thinking of something different, than cutting the case... :?

No I didn’t because my case has a very open mesh at the 5.25” bay area and the hard drive noise
would be direct and nearer to my ears.
And I am using the upper bay area to make an intake airflow path to cool the CPU.

The reason of cutting the case 3.5 rack in first place was to accommodate a bigger intake fan,
if you don’t want to do this you can always suspend your drive vertically.

It seems like an awful lot of fans for a low power setup. You can easily cool all this with just 1 fan.

This is not really good solution for me, because I have two HDD-s, and it would be difficult to put the two there... Or?

I saw you had the Samsung HDD stand with some motherboard screws on a foam... Does this make less noise?

I was told to use some rubber or similar hanging or such with the HDD-s...

you can check this:

foam is very effective reducing vibration but elastic is better IMHO

Hi!

OK... I can say this project is falied...

Although the HDD-s were almost inaudiable, they got hot. Very hot.

I managed to put the two in the bottom 5.25" and above, one space between the other. I thougt, some breeze from the back 12cm fan would reach them this way. (I do not have a CPU fan, that ventilates the air for the back, yet!)

The hotter HDD reached 56C! The other around 46.
The lower was the cooler, it even heated the other above...

Now I have put both HDD-s back. They are in the upper and the middle space, close to each other. I have put a special sponge underneath the lower one, like the dampening sponges.

Hi! :D

agus_c_o, do you think, that I can remove the plastic drive holders? So I heard there are screw holes underneath...

If I could lead my elastic rope through, they could hold the two HDD-s in the 5.25" drive bays.

And I got to install a 12cm or a 8cm fan in front of the HDDs...
So my drives in the old cd-s monunting is too long for that.. no place left
for the fan this way!

I will make and post pictures if done.

Hm...

I am thinking about buying 2 pairs of these:

And mounting it with screws... and hanging the HDD-s using this holder...
If I could really use the screws instad of the plastic thing in my CM Centurion5....
