my desk (Updated)
Phase 1: Outdated
before pic
in progress 1
in progress 2
in progress 3
in progress 4
work complete
Phase 2: Outdated
Phase 2 was intended to deal with the wiring issue, as behind the desk is an absolute mess. the plan was to tuck all the excess wire into a grid of hooks similar to on an antec solo. (for lack of a better comparison.)
starting point
the beast i'm fighting
desk in progress, cleaning extension
cable catches inside desk
HDMI switch hung with plumbers tape to back of desk
another angle, got cord holes drilled
it's so nice having it off the desktop
i really like plumbers tape. commence mounting everything.
speaker wires cleaned up considerably
power strip in desk, holes drilled
begin wire consolidation
wiring continues
computer inplace
wire consolidation complete
pushingt furniture back into place
finished. cleaned up.
Phase 3: Current
in process
finished
inside the door
closer

the back of the thing has an open space in the bottom (for cords and such..)R2_ wrote:RLY? guess i'm really too worried!
But then, in the summer things might be different.
Do you have a picture from behind? I got curious how hot air goes out.
the top of the back has a 250mm fan running at 5v. (i'd guess maybe 400 RPM?) so maybe 40-50 CFM.
FWIW, the computer has a scythe ninja fanless on top of an overclocked e4400.
HDD temps mid 30's, CPU idle temps mid 40's. (but it's always like that. i dont think the ninja is a particularly good cooler, just good for fanless operation. an active fan didnt drop temps more than 2 degrees.)
i was thinking about upgrading my computer when frys had a phenom II X4 965, + a gigabyte 790FX motherboard for 200 even. but i figured the wattage of the x4 965 would probably be too much for the case.
woulda been interesting though. tbh, i kinda regret not getting it.
nice to see real wood product. I finally snapped at my own desk just last evening, tore it all apart, and jacked it up at least half a foot, while needing to stay in a tiny place.
I may go for some of that plywood as well. urethane the heck out of it for a one piece top. nice setup you have going.
and that is a cigarette ash tray you see there...
I also hung the ups on a wood stud.

Get a bolt kit for it. My Q6600 (overclocked, and until recently, no speedstep) usually stays at about 40C with a Ninja on it.Fayd wrote:CPU idle temps mid 40's. I use a bolt-through kit. I bought one from thermalright within a week of having the ninja. the stock 775 mounting setup on the ninja disgusted me. (though I am satisfied with it for AMD. another reason why i want to rebuild my computer as an AMD based computer.Monkeh16 wrote:Get a bolt kit for it. just updated.
not quite done, still gotta re-decorate. (kind of... just hanging a poster i bought.)
installed a divider and a shelf inside the desk extension, extended the shelves by another stud length, made the top shelf wider by 3 inches to accommodate the reciever, and built new shelves (because i couldnt find melamine shelving in the size i needed).
so after making prolific use of a biscuit jointer, this is the result. I still have to put the books back on the shelves, hang the poster, etc.
this is the poster.
