The 120mm case fan in my Sonata seems noisy, more noisy than the 80mm fan in my SS 400 PSU. In fast, it seems to be the noisiest part of my system (running at stock 12v).
In the past I've been happy with the Papst 4412-FGL (http://www.plycon.com/fans/papst120.htm). It runs at a slightly lower RPM and has decent airflow (also at stock 12v).
Can someone advise me as to whether or not replacing the stock Sonata case fan with a 4412-FGL would result in reduced noise?
Thanks.

If you are going to run the Papst fan at 12V (1400rpm right?) then it will be noisy too, but not as much as the stock fan. The Papst is good becuase it undervolts nicely and at 5V it delivers enough airflow AND is very quiet. If you complain about the noise of the Papst fan at 5V, then you have a very very quiet system.
The only noisemakers in my system are:
SilenX 350W PSU with 80mm fan with rubbergrommets
Zalman CNPS7000A @ 1000rpm (less than 5V)
Papst 120mm fan @ 600rpm
Seagate Cudda V

I'm using the Papst fans you mention in my Sonata's at 5V. With a front and back configuration with the front fan ducted through the drive cage area. This has finally allowed me to reach "silence" as I have to get down to floor level to hear anything now. Moving to the Papst at 5Volts was the biggest impovement I've made after aquiring Spinpoint HD's
Seconded exactly. (Except that a SS400 doesn't have Fan Only connectors, so 5V is the best option.) Hey, it doesn't cost anything to give it a go first!Tom Brown wrote:I would encourage you to try the stock fan on the Fan Only connector or change it to 5v before you swap it out for another. Mine stock fans are roughly silent at 5v and my system temps are fine on my front bezel modded Sonatas.
