cutting honeybee patterns behind my case?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

cutting honeybee patterns behind my case?

Post by RaptorZX3 » Sat Jul 19, 2008 10:27 pm

i just though of something!

if the Noctua NF-S12 fans don't have a lot of air pressure when pushing air, would it help for the exhaust fan if i would cut the whole honeybee cutouts behind to remove it?

and then, which one have the least air resistance on fans? the honeybee cutouts? or the standard round metallic grill?

i just want to know, because i'm going to have a Geforce 9600GT inside soon, so if it increase the temperatures of most components inside, i might make some modifications to increase airflow

Cut them out !!!!!!!!
and if you feel sorry after you've done it, take the fan, make it blow towards you to feel the airflow. Then put the grill in front of if and you'll feel the difference immediatly !!!!!!! You'll really be surprised at the difference and you won't be sorry anymore !!!

good luck !!

If using the standard round grill you can also cut away some of the bars for less airflow resistance and still get decent protection. Or if you're careful you coud cut just small sections out of the honeycomb.

I've never done only parts...
I would suggest cutting out more on the edges than in the middle

Cut the grille out completely and install one of these:

that's what i have, but for 120mm. I got this one from my Antec Aria's power supply (this one's my media center, modified with a tri-cool in the PSU). I mean...the case already have honeycomb grill, why putting another grill on the PSU when it's safe enough with the honeycombs? so i took it out for future use.

but where the hell can i get soft silicon anti-vibration bolts? i had 4 spares with my Sonata 2 case, they were great and really easy to install since they are not made of hard material. Noctua's anti-vibration bolts are made of hard material and hard to install unfortunately.

what else can i use for absorbing vibrations from fans, and works on full screw-holes?

and does it really make a big difference on vibrations with rubber grommets or metal screws?

I'm sure you can find similar cheaper elsewhere. E-Bay would be my first stop.

Nexus fan mounts are superior:

Very soft, but they don't snap easy. Mine survived many installs (and still do)

If you bought Noctua fans already just use the soft mounts included. I don't know if they are "superior", but they are pretty good. :)
