Antec Mini P180: will it accomodate a Scythe Ninja HSF?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Antec Mini P180: will it accomodate a Scythe Ninja HSF?

Post by IanM » Sat Aug 16, 2008 8:36 am

Hi,

I've been happily using a full size Antec P180 and Scythe Ninja with 120mm fan, but now I would like to reclaim some space in my office & move to a smaller m-atx system. Will my full height Scythe Ninja fit comfortably into the Mini P180?

Alternative case or fan combination suggestions welcome if the above is not a good pairing.

Thanks.

If the Ninja doesn't fit, there's something wrong with the case. The Mini P180 can accommodate a Xigmatek HDT183 which is 9mm higher than the Scythe Ninja Rev B, and 4mm higher than the Ninja 2.

Depending on your CPU, you can probably run fanless easily with the mini P180 because the exhaust fan is so close to the CPU heatsink. If you have a Pentium D CPU, then you may not want to go fanless at all, but if you have a Core 2 Duo or newer 45nm CPU, then you'll have no problem going fanless in the case.

Thank you bonestonne, that's very useful to know.

I haven't decided on a full system spec yet, but most likely it will be a low power consumption AMD based on a 780GX or 790GX chipset mobo, but as my current Ninja would passively cool a s939 4800+ in the full size P180 I feel very confident that it will be more than adequate in the new PC.

It's just a shame the newer P180's have been hit with the ugly stick, really not keen on those front panel vents.

Hmm, fanless in a P180 mini? I have a P180 Mini with a Core 2 Duo OCed from 2.4 to 3.2 and with just the big exhaust fan on and a Nexus 120 on the Scythe (original revision), my temps are around 60C Idle on Core Temp :/

Ouch. That could be something wrong with your mounting, 60 idle is not good. Try taking back that overclock a bit, you'll turn out your CPU in 6 months with those sort of temps!

Not the same case, but a duct made a world of difference with my setup. I only use one fan and my temps are VERY cool on a Phenom x3.

at the same time, that's the Rev A i think he's referring to, that only had the socket 478 adapter for mounting it. i don't think there's a better way he can mount it, but checking on the pressure, and the contact between the CPU and the base would be closer to the problem. my Rev A Ninja keeps a Pentium D 940 (95W) at ~38C idle, i think under load it went up to ~50C.
