What best to do with a big chunk of foam?

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

What best to do with a big chunk of foam?

Post by Markp.com » Wed Nov 17, 2004 7:12 pm

I was out shopping today and found an arts and crafts type store.

Found a foam tile 24 inches by 24... Whats best to do with this? Line my case door, floor and ceiling... or create a muffler type box to go over my exhaust/psu fans.

I want to cut down as much noise as possible, so which will give the best results? Sorry to be so vague in my question, but those with experience in this area should be able to help a bit :)

Depending on what type of foam it is (if it's rigid enough) you could make a Bird House enclosure for your hard drive. A bit ambitious I know, but probably the best way out there to cool/quiet your drives.

Carve them into little ear plugs? :-)

Without knowing the properties of the foam it's kinda hard to say what application is best for it.

I don't really want to quiet my drives, its the PSU exhaust thats making the most noise at the minute. I am getting a new PSU though, so maybe I'll leave it till I get that and see how quiet it all is.

hmm... that will do alot more then any amount of foam.. asside from wraping the computer in 50 pounds of it.... lol.

try www.7volts.com and try reading some of the guids on spcr here. undervolting any fan to 5 or 7 volts will dramaticly reduce noise. and still provide adiquite cooling

Or get yourself a voltage controlled (not PWM) rheobus, so you can set your fan speed manually.
