dilemma: Love my P150 but it will not fit 8800 series GPU...

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

dilemma: Love my P150 but it will not fit 8800 series GPU...

Post by yacoub » Fri Apr 06, 2007 4:51 pm

I'm not sure what to do! I'm going to be upgrading shortly and since ATi won't have competing R600-based GPUs on the market until at least July (and probably not even then), my only option is the 8800GTS.

P150 will not fit an 8800 NVidia card. It's short about an inch in clearance.

What case would you recommend for someone who loves their P150, doesn't want anything bigger in size (especially weight), but must fit an 8800 GPU?

And it must have similar quiet features like harddrive isolation grommets (doesn't have to have suspension though, I never did use that feature), 120mm front and rear fan mounts, etc. I'd consider a P182 (although the price is a bit much) but it's friggin' huge AND heavy.

I think most SPCR forum members will suggest the p182. Your vid card will likely fit inside and besides, the p182 is the p150's big brother, so there is no way you cannot like it!

I absolutely don't know... the above advice to go to a P180 is mine as well, BUT you don't want anything bigger or heavier than a P150, and a P180 is DEFINITELY a big heavy case. I really know nothing about non-Antec cases from an SPCR perspective...

me either! :(

I'm kinda sad. Maybe the fan on my 7950GT KO that sounds like it's starting to die won't give out until July... and maybe the R600 card that's price-competitive with the 320MB 8800GTS will be smaller in size... lol

Why not just mod the back of the drive cage by simply notching the portion of the cage that touches the card.

Make sure to insulate the notches. this should allow the card to be installed while keeping the stock config.

hmm i guess that's something to consider. i haven't the tools but if i marked it out i could take the drive cage to a friend's place to work on it.

That is probably a good idea. This way you do not have to spend anymore on a new case. Furthermore, the r600 is probably going to be huge as well.

How old is your current card?

My advice, keep the P150 and replace the fan.

If you're not in a rush to get a new card, replace the fan and keep an eye on what comes out, cards & cases, for the rest of the year.

Get a Solo case. It's basically an updated version of P150 without a PSU.

The 8800 GTS will fit into a P150 without any modification to the case, it's only the GTX which won't fit, it's about 1cm too long.

Below are some images of my P150 and 8800 GTX configuration. Most of the heat the 8800 produces is expelled through 4/5 slots in the plastic housing, causing case temps to rise, the cardboard duct helps direct this heat out the back.

Yep. Just to back up with el-tel said ... the 8800GTS will fit in the Solo just fine (I built one for a mate!), and therefore will fit the P150 just fine too.

Ninja, and a Skt 939 proc. Looks like an Asus A8N-SLi Premium

Yep, cyberspyder is correct, the heatsink is a Scythe Ninja with orange Nexus fan, and the CPU is a Socket 939 Athlon 64 X2 3800+.
