Antec Solo Mod

Post by morgtom » Sun Aug 31, 2008 3:43 pm

Hi all, its almost the time of the year for upgrades and my antec solo is getting a bit boring, same fans (nexus) for about 2 years and same parts.

What i was thinking of doing is modding the front of the case so it allows 1 120mm fan rather than the 2 92mm fans i have currently. Is that possible?

What my plan is, is to get 3 of those new 140mm scyth fans with the 120mm mounting holes and put one on the front, one on my cpu cooler and one to exhaust..

Also i will be getting that Xigmatek HDT-S1283 plus a new 45nm quad core, and a new GPU, probably the 59tdp 4670 when released.

So what do you reckon guys? Is it possible to mount such large fans at the front? Also what about removing the grill? I have heard that helps with cooling, but does it increase dust?

If anyone has any advice, suggestions, or has seen a thread with modding of this case please do let me know.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi,
there is a thread somewhere on that forum about the mod you are discribing to fit a 120mm fan.
As for the grills, I've done the mod (both front and back) and it really does improve ariflow.
good luck with the mod and don't forget to post pics when you're done :)

Front: the fan mounting ‘door’ mounts the standard fans 10mm inside the HDD bay. That bay is 130mm wide, so I can’t see how a 140 fan will fit inside, so the 140 will stick out a further 10mm into the space between fan and plastic case front. That small space is adequate for the intended 92mm fans, but you’re losing 10mm and using a 140, which surely needs more space. Too little space for a 140 to work, imho.

Rear: looks to be too little space to fit a 140 inside. On the outside, maybe, but you’ll be hard pushed to mod the fan case hole big enough for the 140’s blades.

I was wondering however that this new fan mentioned here viewtopic.php?t=49391 might actually fit. I think the fan is less than 140mm and is of a different shape so it should fit. If a 120mm fan fits at the front wont this new fan fit also? And ditto for the back?

What you think? Worth a shot?

Thanks

from scythe's website :
"
Caution: When using this product as a case fan inside the PC, minimum 140mm x 140mm of clearance is required in order to install this case fan.
"

I doubt you'll get the 140mm clearance in the front of the solo if you look at the pics here : viewtopic.php?t=48899

[EDIT : using a regular 120mm will work though]
