Mounting 2.5" Laptop HDD in NSK2480

Enclosures and acoustic damping to help quiet them.

Mounting 2.5" Laptop HDD in NSK2480

Post by david81 » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:14 pm

So time has come to replace our trust old XBOX (1st generation) running XBMC with a full fledged HTPC.

I've decided on the NSK2480 for the case and, as recommended by SPCR, would like to use a laptop HDD to minimize noise as much as possible. The HDD mounting system in the 2480 seems a bit different than normal though and I wonder if anyone has successfully soft mounted/suspended a 2.5" drive in the HDD area of this case.

I'd like to keep the 5.25" bays for a DVD (possibly Blu-Ray) drive and a memory card reader, so this leaves the hard drive mounting area.

Am I stuck with a full 3.5" drive or can I successfully mount the laptop drive in this odd arrangement?

Any pictures to illustrate a successful mounting?

Thanks in advance,

David

Welcome to SPCR. :)

Suspending a 2.5" hdd in a 3.5" cage is one of the easiest things to do, even in the NSK2480. Here is one of many examples:

Good luck!

Startech makes 2.5-3.5 converters that are very solid and easy to use, although they are pricey.

The SATA version is SATA35252X. There is also a PATA version.

THANK YOU!!

That was exactly what I was looking for. I had thought about that method, but wasn't sure if it would work in practice, given the orientation of the drive.

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as the build progresses.

Here's my addition... Can't hear it unless the case is open and I have my ear within a couple inches of the drive.
