how big?

Post by IDvsEGO » Sun Aug 15, 2010 8:27 pm

about to get a new case...not sure what size I want to go with. Here are the components I need to fit in...

mobo...matx or atx, doesnt matter
CPU cooler is a mugen2
vid is 5830 with an accelero S1
1 HDD
1 optical

thats it, not a lot of gear. so I am considering a small case like the sg02, a mid case like the solo, or a bigger case like the raven2. main goal is making it quiet and cool the stuff I have. suggestions?

I suppose it really depends alot on where you're going to use it...

So, ask a few questions of yourself:
Will it go into a small room or big room? Home Theatre use?
Placing on a desk or beside it?
Do you plan to move the PC around alot, or take it places. Do you need portability?
Will you be in and out of it often? Adding/Removing/Replacing components?
What is your price point?

I think the answers to these questions will really dictate where this goes. hehe.

Personally, I have big clumsy hands so mini cases like the sg02... A solo is about as small as I'll look at for my own use.

One thing to think about though... You went from Solo to Raven2... That's a huge jump!

Solo is listed here as 40 Litres, whereas the Raven is some 69 Litres...

There are a few awesome cases that are kinda lost in that... The Fortress FT01 is a really nice size and not sure where you're at but Fractal's Define R3 is just hitting the shelves and offers a ~50L chassis for a great price (though it can be a little hard to get in certain countries)

So, plenty of options. I find the Fortress FT02/Raven RV02 are just too big for my office... or... most offices... Also, I'd say that Raven is a big mighty huge for what you're planning to put in it :)

the room is pretty big. not for home theater use, its a general use/gaing PC

placement would depend on the case but I have flexibility and ts isnt a motivating factor in the case choice.

not much moving around, protability is minimal

in and our of it...its pretty set right now so not for a while.

price is under $150...as far under as possible while still getting what I want :)

I went from the solo to the raven 2 because I dont NEED anything bigger than a solo. right now i am using a VSK2000 and it is fine size wise. I was looking at the raven for the cooling factor with the swapped up mobo. It is not my leading candidate but I like the idea of it for both cooling and cable exterior managment. Wish they made a mATX version.

Fortress is too much $$. I am in US and will check out the fractal cases more. Another optionI have considered is the tj08

Hi IDvsEGO,

5830 with an accelero S1 maybe hard to fit in a small case and hard to cool if you don't use a 120mm on it

I like the solo for the heavy steel panel witouth a lot fan holes in it, it's an old design case but it still very popular here, a

Antec P180 mini or P183.
Top mounted PSU in the Solo will absorb all the heat from the Mugen2 and ramp up.

It seems the P180 mini is out of stock in a lot of places, are they planning a new model?

But if you look at the prices on Camelcamelcamel, it seems as though they are steadly headed upwards, which hints that the supply has been cut and they are slowly running out.
