Upside down PSU?

Post by mrzed » Thu Aug 07, 2003 10:19 am

I was just thinking about this. I remember hearing about people doing it years ago, but can't remember why.

My thought was to take a PSU with a 92/120 fan on the bottom, and invert it so it draws the hot air from the very top of the case. Block all internal vents, remove the rear PSU fan, and open up the back as much as possible. Just leave about a 1cm gap at the top to allow the hot air to be pulled through.

It seems the main reason fans are put on the bottom of PSU's is to pull the heat away from the CPU and GPU. With a rear case fan, all that's really needed is PSU cooling.

This would also allow the trapped air at the top of the case out, without resorting to a noisy blowhole.

Anyone tried it? Results? Thoughts?

Some cases just don't have enough clearance to do it. You'd need at least 5 cm (2") to minimize the noise effect. Plus, some of us put the unnecessary PIV power wires there. :D
