Lowering CPU usage with EMIII or console version.

Post by wussboy » Mon Jun 28, 2004 7:46 am

Well, I think the subject about says it all. How can I lower my CPU usage from F@H. I run EM3 and the console version of F@H. I know how to change it in the GUI version of F@H, but not the console. Any help is appreciated!

for the GUI: right click the folding icon in tool tray, choose configure, advanced, adjust the slide bar :D

Hah! :) If you read my post a little closer, you'll see that I knew that bit! Ha ha. It's the console version that I'm worried about.

Thanks anyways, unregistered.

Try stopping the console and add -configonly to the shortcut to fah*.exe on your desktop. Then restart.

I think that the routine to reduce cpu usage is in there. Maybe in "advanced settings."

You can change your config from EMIII too. Just go into config, select your box, tick the small button on the left (tooltip says config) set CPU usage to xxx save, restart, voila

IIRC, I think that works only if you're using EMIII to launch F@H.

-config flag and say "yes" to advanced options.

Sorry about that!

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, another consideration might be undervolting and/or underclocking, if your board supports it. There are 2 active threads that this is being discussed, (you probrably already read them) Folding PSU Comparison and 5.12Ghz for 106 watts.

I've been experimenting with this myself over the last couple days. Once I get my Kill a Watt and Seasonic rev3 RMA delivery, I will be able to post my results.

Thanks everyone who replied. I've got it working again. Hopefully I can tick along at 90% without problems.

If you have to reduce CPU utilization because of high ambient temperature, you may try to use at the same time CPUidle.

Here in Madrid we are suffering 39ºC under the shadow, so not wishing to cook my pc, I turned on CPUidle. Probably you'll see that cpuidle and F@H share the CPU fifty-fifty. If that's too much wasting of CPU cycles, you should try the following. In F@H options check on the "a bit higher than normal priority", checking this and tunning the CPU utilization of F@H you'll be able to get the temperature you want with a bit higher PPW than just lowering CPU usage. All the % of CPU cycle not used by F@H will be "used" by cpuidle, thus lowering cpu temp.

Hope it helps.
