New core (QMD) gives BigWU's with even more PPD.

Post by Tibors » Sat Mar 12, 2005 9:40 pm

There is a new core called QMD. The 19xx WU's use this core.

The good news:
I got a boost of 30% in PPD over other BigWU's.

The bad news:
It runs only on procs with SSE2. I can't get it clearly out of all the posts at Folding-community.org, but it might even only run at P4's at the moment. But if it doesn't work on A64's yet, then it will in the near future.
My PSU makes funny noises when the PC runs a WU of this type.

 And I was impatiently waiting for one of those to show up here to boost my performance, which has been low lately. I guess I'll have to find a way to justify building an A64 rig...

Boy does it consume memory... I have 2 iterations running right now (Hyperthreading CPU) and I'm not sure my 1 GB of RAM will be enough :( At least there's a substantial point bonus for this.

6 hours till I'm free of this Tinker. I got project 1901 on my Athlon & Duron (small WU) but not my A64, for some reason - so unfortunately I don't know if SSE works with it.

On folding-community.org there was a thread on the use of bonusses. One of the arguments against it was that after a certain time people who get the normal work complain they don't get a bonus ....................

Chris, when did you get the 1901 at your Athlon & Duron? When this core was brand new it could happen, but the WU should have taken ages. That is why they should go to SSE2 capable machines only now.

Another effect of this heavy SSE2 reliance is that you get no "bonus" from hyperthreading. Two WU at the same time will take as much time as two in series.

Hmm... At home I'm only folding on this wee little P3-566, don't really watch the PPD anymore, just know that its plugging away.

I got it about a month ago. It must have been new then. (I seem to remember getting three different QMDs on the duron system within 2 weeks! That was before I got FahMon so I don't know how it compared to other cores, but it took longer to finish than anything else it got.)

TBH I don't mind as long as my computer does something useful, and SPCR doesn't drop out of the top 20 ;)

Yep, the begin of March was when the QMD core was made availlable for non-beta testers.

Really? I got a Gromacs today. There are very few Tinkers around now.
p1910-12 are the big QMDs and have just arrived (afaik), report back if you get one & what processor you have.

9 of my 15 CPUs are currently running Tinkers. The rest are Gromacs.

Yup, the same here. Never had as many tinkers before: about 50% of my folding time goes to tinkers right now.

I had a whole series of tinkers for the last while, finally I'm getting Gromacs and now I'm nearly done my first QMD.

I have a 1910 unit (Run 7, Clone 65, Gen 12), it has only 2107 steps and takes about 17 minutes per frame on my P4 2.8C system, giving me about 420ppd. Its a pretty big memory hog, the core using up 203MB right now.
