How do I get to the stock cooler on my 8800GT to remove it?

Post by retiredguy » Tue Nov 27, 2007 11:11 am

I got a Thermalright HR-03 Plus heatsink to put on an EVGA GeForce 8800 GT video card for the new system I am building. The front of the EVGA card is covered by a metal enclosure that I have to remove in order to replace the stock cooler with the one from Thermalright. The metal cover has slots in its sides that fit over metal tabs on the video card. I tried gently prying one side of the cover out and up to remove it without success. Should I not worry about destroying the cover to remove it? Will that void the warranty? Is there some trick I am missing?
I tried to put a picture of it here, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Instructions for that would be appreciated. If they are already on this site, a pointer in that direction would be fine.
Thanks.[/img]

Well, there should be no prying involved. You should only have to take un-do the screws from the back of the card, and from there the cooler should come right off.

oh
Well, as Linus once said - even dumb questions have answers.
Thanks (to both of you)! I'm glad I didn't pry any harder.

Isn't the Thermalright HR-03 Plus only compatible with the 8800GTS? The mounting holes don't match IRC.

Amourek - You're right. I rechecked the Thermalright Website and discovered that I need the Thermalright HR-03 GT. Thanks for the tip. I'll order the correct one tonight & return the other one.
