APC UPS question

Post by Stephen » Sun May 27, 2007 4:34 pm

I just bought an APC UPS (Uninteruptible Power Supply) - the Back-UPS XS-900). I got the battery out on the compartment and then connected the one wire that came unhooked - per the directions. When I first started to connect it, it gave off a small electrical spark. Then I connected it without any further discharges. Is this anything I need to worry about?

Also, the directions say to charge it 18 hours prior to use. Does it really take that long?

The spark is usual. It's probably mentioned in the manual, if you read it carefully.

The advice for charging is so that if there is an outage in the first hours the UPS is connected, that there will be enough juice to provide backup power. I also think the charging circuit firmware does some calibration at this time.

Is your XS-900's fan always on? Other than that, mine works great.

Yes, the fan is always on - kind of a low hum.
